The entrance is situated 2040 metres above sea level. The Roki Tunnel was vital for the Russian military in the 2008 South Ossetia war because it is the only direct route through the Caucasus Mountains to South Ossetia. The tunnel was reconstructed due to damage caused by 2008 South Ossetia War. Reconstruction took two and half years and was finished in October 2015. All costs of reconstruction were paid by Russian side.
