The Australian city of Sydney has bid farewell to a monorail that looped the city for 25 years. Over 1,500 people queued up on Sunday to be part of the rail's last ride.
The monorail was set up in 1988 and became world famous during the 2000 Olympic Games. It was designed to relieve street level congestion, and connect the central business district with tourist attractions. But the futuristic monorail suffered continuous controversy since it opened, with accusations that it was inefficient and blocked street level views.
The New South Wales state government announced the closure in March, saying it was being shut down to make way for the redevelopment of Darling Harbor. The government says it can no longer justify costly upgrades to keep the ageing monorail in operation.
