Natividad by Guillermo “Habacuc” Vargas

Whilst looking into installations and the different types that exist, I came across Natividad. Now, Natividad isn’t necessarily a ‘bog standard’ installation as it wasn’t built for the specific environment that it was placed in, which most installations are, however, I chose to look into Natividad as it had a very strong authority over those who viewed it. Habacuc got a couple of street children to capturdog2404_468x353e a stray dog that he then called Natividad, and then proceeded to chain the dog up in a gallery and decide to starve the dog of both food and water. He tethered the dog up under the words ‘Eres Lo Que Lees’ – ‘You Are What You Read’ made out of dog biscuits while he played the Sandinista anthem backwards and set 175 pieces of crack cocaine a light in a massive incense burner. Vargas, 32, said he wanted to test the public’s reaction, and insisted none of the exhibition visitors intervened to stop the animal’s suffering. It is this authority I am talking about. Many people have signed a petition to attempt to stop Habacuc from taking part in this years event, he has also received many death threats, however, NOT ONE PERSON who viewed the ‘artwork’ did anything to help the dog due to the fact Habacuc specifically said that no-one could, no matter how much they wanted too. So he had an authority over the public, and I see this authority to not only anger the public but make them feel anxious whilst viewing Natividad. Habacuc never let anyone know whether the dog survived once the exhibition had finished, or whether the dog died. I myself would be one of the public that would have been angry and, would have signed the petition. But I question myself whether I’d of done anything about saving the dog during the exhibition due to the fact there was an authority present over me. Would I of listened to Habacuc’s instructions to do nothing for the dog?
