Museums & interiors. Vienna’s Secession times (4h)

480

Our half day private tour is the most complete art nouveau tour that you can book in four hours to learn about Secession in Vienna. The highlights of this complete 4-hour private tour are the Museum of Applied Arts, Karlsplatz, Secession, Postsparkasse and Belvedere.

In this tour learn about the design elements, political and aesthetic philosophy of the elegant turn-of-century style. Understand the history behind the movement that rejected Austria’s imperial past through new types of art led by a visionary group of artists including Gustav Klimt, Otto Wagner, Rudolf von Alt, Hoffmann and Moser.

This private, special theme tour is suitable for those who would like to immerse in the atmosphere of Vienna 1900, when it was the cultural capital of Europe, like Florence was around 1500. In the year 1900 the City of Music was the seventh largest city in the world. Nowadays the Austrian capital is not in the the list of the “100 largest cities in the world”.

Vienna had a higher density of conservative nobility than Budapest, the other co-capital of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, and this fact delayed the entrance of this new artistic movement in Vienna. It was not until 1896 that the painter Gustav Klimt and a number of other artists quit the conservative Künstlerhaus and founded a new art association called Secession, a name used by a popular building completed in 1898 and used by many of the members of this movement, artists like Otto Wagner or Josef Hoffman.

Description

Itinerary

On this complete 4 hour walking and public transport tour we will be pleased to show you the major examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Vienna. This Secession tour is focused on museums and interiors of buildings. We consider that this approach allows a deeper understanding of the style and the cultural background of the society of the turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries.

We will start our trip in Postsparkasse to arrive in the Museum of Decorative Arts (MAK) half an hour later. There, we will explore a collection of early 20th-century paintings, illustrations and furniture, including works by Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffman, amongst others.

Then, we will head to Karlsplatz, the central Charles’ Square. At noon we will go to Secession, the icon of Viennese Secession style (also called Jugendstil or art nouveau). Originally conceived as an exhibition hall, this space allows us to consider the exchange of ideas between the avant-garde in various cities across Europe as the continent teetered on the edge of World War I.

After visiting the Sezession building we will head to Belvedere. In this Palace see Gustav Klimt’s legendary painting “The Kiss” as well as major works by Schiele and Kokoschka for yourself.

This private tour will be a journey back in time to Vienna’s Belle Epoque. At the end of the tour, you will have seen some of the most iconic Art Nouveau buildings in Vienna, and gained a deeper understanding of the culture, symbolism and the people of the time.

Focus of the tour

This private tour include lots of references to history, architecture, decorative, cultural art, literature and music of the fin de siècle. The main focus of our tour is on museums and interiors of buildings of the Secession style in Vienna. Art Nouveau in Vienna

Art Nouveau has left its architectural impact all over the world, including Vienna. Austrian artists, however, developed a unique manifestation of the style known as Vienna Secession.

Vienna had a higher density of conservative nobility than Budapest, the other co-capital of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, and this fact delayed the entrance of the new artistic movement in Vienna. It was not until 1896 that the painter Gustav Klimt and several other artists quit the conservative Künstlerhaus and founded a new art association called Secession, and wrongly cited sometimes as art noveau, a name used by a popular building completed in 1898 and used by many of the members of this movement, artists like Otto Wagner or Josef Hoffman.

Check HERE the seven different art nouveau experiences that we have for you in the Austrian city. A very popular one is the 8h private tour titled Complete driving Vienna Art Nouveau private tour. Check it out!

Amazing Vienna. So much to see. If you love Art Nouveau and look for a detailed information and a great guide, book with artnouveau.club. Two months later we booked a private tour in Paris, also amazing. Europe is fantastic.

First time in Viena, and won’t be the last. I discovered many Jugendstil places that I want to show to my family soon.
