Is “IT” in you?

Proteins- what we have to understand is that, in layman’s terms… proteins are the chief actors within the cell, said to be carrying out the duties specified by the information encoded in genes. There are a gazillion proteins in the body, who knows how many there really are.

What is laminin? Laminin is your body’s cell-adhesion molecules. It is the “glue” that holds all the cells in your body together. Do you know what is so incredible about this? It’s in the shape of a cross. The “glue” that holds your skin together, that holds your organs together, that literally holds everything in your body together, is a cross! Colossians 1:17 reads: “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Here is how wikipedia describes them :”Laminins are major proteins in the basal lamina (one of the layers of the basement membrane), a protein network foundation for most cells and organs. The laminins are an important and biologically active part of the basal lamina, influencing cell differentiation, migration, adhesion as well as phenotype and survival” You see….laminins are what hold us together….LITERALLY.

There is a special type of protein called laminin, which was created with a very special purpose in the human body. It’s purpose is for ADHESION. It is the glue of the human body, it is what holds us together, our membranes, our cells. Without it, there would be no me, no you… our physical existence would cease to exist! In a sermon, Louie Giglio asks how we can know that God will hold us together? He states, “That’s really what we want to know today, and I’ll tell you how you can know today that God will always hold you together, no matter what.” Mr. Giglio then discusses the function of laminin (as glue), and its structure (a cross) in the body. He relates this to Colossians 1:17

Like everybody else 2,000 years ago, Paul was completely oblivious to laminin, yet he writes here of the Creator, who holds all life together, and by extension, God’s love shown by the sacrifice of His Son on the cross. And it is that which binds us together as a whole person spiritually, just like laminin does biologically.

True, the cross members of laminin molecules are more pliable than the wood used to make the cross, and there was probably not a double helix on the cross used to crucify Jesus. Indeed, it was probably not the Latin Cross shape we are generally familiar with. Neither was it a fancy fleur-de-lis or any of the thousands of different cross styles. The cross used to crucify Jesus was made of roughly hewn timbers; bent and twisted.

The laminin symbol is to show the relationship between the three chains that make up the molecule. There doesn’t have to be a spiritual parallel with this, but it does bring to mind the three-in-one nature of the Holy Trinity. And the adhesive property of the molecule aligns so well with our bond with Christ. Now, just as atheists are trying to disprove something they don’t believe in, Christians would quickly falter if they said laminin proves God is the Creator of life and our Redeemer. The shape does resemble a cross (sometimes) but that does not prove anything just as must as me standing in my garage makes me a mechanic! The truth found in Col. 1:15-20 would be no less truthful if laminin looked like a smiley face.

Certainly God can give us signs and confirmation of His Word, but like other ‘signs’, we should remind ourselves we are not infallible. We must be cautious not to assume our limited knowledge is superior to God’s Word. Picking up snippets from innumerable websites like this one can be entertaining but they are no match for thoughtful reasoning and considered study of the Bible. So are we saying that the cross shape of the laminin is irrelevant? No, not at all. God made all things and He made all things for a purpose, most of which we do not yet understand. But occasionally we stumble across scientific facts that help confirm the obvious.

If laminin, in the form of a cross, keeps the human body bound together, does this not also reflect the truth about the power of God’s words in Christ Jesus, with which, in one’s deep faith, humility and obedience to God’s will, we may become one in Christ and one with God, our Almighty Father and Creator?

Just because you can’t see and touch laminin doesn’t mean it’s not in you just like you can’t see and touch Jesus!  It’s always there if we know it (or understand it) or not and without it we are nothing!
