Don’t know how to Tunisian crochet yet? No worries! I have a beginner-friendly tutorial to show you how to crochet the Tunisian simple stitch here. It’s a great starting point for learning the basics of Tunisian crochet!

About this Tunisian Crochet Blanket Pattern

Tunisian crochet is a unique way of crocheting using a special hook and different techniques. It’s a great option when you want to take a break from your usual crochet hooks. Our blanket, created with the full stitch in Tunisian crochet, is available in 7 sizes, ensuring you find the perfect fit.

When you make this project, you’ll practice the full stitch a lot. This stitch makes a thick but flexible fabric. One side looks woven, and the other side looks like the knit garter stitch. I used 5 different colors and wrote the pattern that way, but you can use as many or as few colors as you like. The best part is, that you can use almost any medium-weight yarn you have in your collection.

Before you begin, review this page entirely so you understand the full scope of the project. We have a list of recommended supplies and abbreviations here on this page as well as written instructions and a tutorial to walk you through our full stitch Tunisian crochet blanket from start to finish.

Color Planning

Using two different colors of yarn will really make this blanket stand out. Choose your main color (as shown in dark gray in the photos) and at least one contrast color.

If you decide to use more than one contrast color, you’ll need to calculate how much yarn you need for each. To do this, simply divide the yardage of the contrast color by the number of colors you plan to use.

For example, to make the lap-sized blanket with 5 contrast colors, you’ll need 176 yds of each contrast color.

Pattern Notes

This easy Tunisian crochet blanket can be made with any medium-weight yarn. If you need inspiration, see my favorite yarns for blankets in this post here!

To figure out how many skeins you need of your main color, take the main color total yardage and divide it by the number of yards in the skein of yarn that you want to use. If it’s not a whole number, you should round up to the nearest whole.

Gauge: 11.5 sts x 13 rows = 4″ worked in the full stitch

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Tunisian rib stitch project curling?

If you find that your Tunisian crochet project is curling, you aren’t doing anything wrong. Curling at the bottom and top edge is normal for Tunisian crochet. Because you don’t turn the work with Tunisian crochet stitches, tension is pulled in the same direction and causes the curling.

While you can’t completely get rid of the curling, there are some things you can do to reduce it. See our article here for the best tips!

Can I use a regular crochet hook for Tunisian crochet?

Since all of the stitches need to be on the hook at once, you can’t use a standard crochet hook for Tunisian crochet. Entrelac crochet is similar to Tunisian crochet and is the one exception. See that in action with our Entrelac Crochet baby blanket.

How do I make a blanket with a Tunisian crochet hook?

Since most Tunisian crochet hooks are 12″-14″ in length, you are not able to crochet a blanket with them. You will need to use an interchangeable Tunisian hook set (similar to interchangeable circular knitting needles). Interchangeable Tunisian hooks are standard hook length, but allow for a cord to be attached to the end. This allows you to crochet projects bigger than 12″ or 14″.

What Tunisian crochet hook should I buy?

When you’re just starting out, a standard Tunisian crochet hook in a 6.5 mm size will allow you to make small projects and swatches to see if you like Tunisian crochet.

If you plan to make bigger projects, I recommend the interchangeable Tunisian crochet hook set from Lantern Moon. This set includes an abundance of hook and cord sizes so you can make any size project you want. Here is a review I wrote up on them to see if this is the right set for you.
