Post 11: Time

Salvador-Dali

This piece by Salvador Dali is my all time favorite piece of surreal art. Salvador Dali could definitely be labeled as a deranged, crazy human being, but his art is fascinating. This painting of the multiple clocks and what appears to be part of a human face or ear really grabs my attention with the message is perceives. I think Dali was interpreting time. The way the clocks are draping could be a symbol for time being a clingy, burden. It just exists; we think of time as a measurement of our lifetime. We don’t consider life without time, we just accept it. Humans are the only living beings that even label existence using a structured system that really only counts down the days. There are no surprises as far as what “time” is going to come next, it’s all just a matter of what will happen during that time. Regardless of the numerical figures though, life still goes on. The continuous journey of existence still proceeds whether we calculate it or not. I think Dali’s painting depicts the drooping, hanging clocks as if they are just material objects with no real value. He makes them look kind of pathetic and unimportant, messing with our interpretations of what time really is. However, overall the painting looks like it could represent the dream world. With the distortions of the clocks and tree growing out of what looks like a table, it is clearly not a replication of reality. Whatever the true meaning behind this painting is (if there is one), Salvador Dali raises an interesting question about this human concept of time.
