Myrciaria jaboticaba, the Brazilian grapetree, jaboticaba or jabuticaba, is a tree in the family Myrtaceae, native to Minas Gerais, Goiás and São Paulo states in Brazil. Related species in the genus Myrciaria, often referred to by the same common names, are native to Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru and Bolivia. Purple fruit variety- Sabarah. A slow-growing tree, jaboticaba requires medium to high sun exposure and will thrive in a wide range of soil mediums (it may take a few years if grown from a 3 gallon pot to get fruit). The fruit is sweet and tart, with a texture like a muscadine grape, but with a complex array of tropical flavors, with hints of spiciness, especially in the skin. Once it develops, flower fruit follows very quickly. It will grow to about 15 feet. South Florida’s trees produce fruit twice a year (spring and fall.)
