They are two malted biscuits separated by a light chocolate cream filling and covered in a thin coat of chocolate - sound familiar? Well, this delicious Australian chocolate treat is a chocolate biscuit similar to a McVities Penguin.
Tim Tam biscuits are produced by Arnott’s Biscuits Ltd who are Australia’s biggest biscuit producer. It was back in 1958 that the idea came about to make a better biscuit than McVities Penguin, after tasting them on trip to Britain. The name Tim Tam actually came from the winning horse at the 1958 Kentucky Derby.

Or should that be Australia versus the UK! Tim Tams are undoubtedly akin to the classic school lunch box favourite of Penguins.
The chocolate-covered, cream-filled biscuits are indeed similar, although a Penguin is slightly longer by around a centimetre. In a taste test the Penguin is reportedly crunchier, although more sugary making it somewhat cloying while Tim Tam’s level of cocoa is more distinct with a smoother texture.
Even Boris Johnson is getting in on the act. In recent post Brexit Australia/UK trade talks, the prime minister hailed Tim Tams.
"I want a world in which we send you Marmite, you send us Vegemite," Johnson continued. "We send you Penguins and you send us, with reduced tariffs, these wonderful Arnott’s Tim Tams," he said, holding up a family pack.

Doing a Tim Tam Slam (also known as the Tim Tam Shotgun, Tim Tam Bomb, Tim Tam Explosion, Tim Tam Bong and Tim Tam Suck) is apparently the correct Australian way to eat them.
The Tim Tam Slam is the tradition of drinking a hot beverage through a Tim Tam. Yes, apparently it is possible. Start by biting off opposite corners of the Tim Tam. Then submerge one end into the hot drink and suck through the biscuit like a straw! This softens the Tim Tam and when the out coating of chocolate melts you can eat the biscuit or slam it in your mouth in one go!
