How to Paint

The Lovers by René Magritte

Difficulty: 3.5/5
Colours: Titanium white, ultramarine, red ochre, mars black, yellow (just a bit!)
Brushes: Flat brush, detail round brush

I’m beginning to fall in love with Magritte’s style of surrealism (sorry Dali) – it’s simple and beautiful, saying so much with so little!

I found painting the folds and creases of the masked faces the most challenging part of the process, as it both required speed (to blend the acrylics before each tone dried) and patience (going through the many layers to create depth).

If you’re having difficulty painting straight lines, a trick is to use masking tape to frame parts of the piece, paint over then remove the tape (a bit like a stencil).
