Summary
Physical Description
Toy clothes line, 'Hills Hoist', metal, Hills Company, Australia, 1950-1965 This is a toy replica of a Hills Hoist rotary clothes line. It is made of silver coloured metal with wire lines. A circular base supports the central vertical pole on which is attached the mechanism for raising and lowering the line. This mechanism is an accurate scale copy of the real Hills mechanism. The brand name 'Hills Hoist' appears on it in relief. A second pole runs up the centre of the central pole. At the top of this pole are attached four horizontal tubes joined to form a cross. Five wires for hanging the clothes are stretched around this cross structure. The base and some of joints are rusty.

PRODUCTION
Notes
This is a scale replica of the Hills Hoist designed by Lance Hill in 1948. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, toy household and domestic equipment was designed both for the amusement of young girls and to familiarise them with the equipment and practice of domestic labour. The appearance of the Hills Hoist logo suggests that this toy was made by, or under licence from, the Hills company.
