English: Frank Hurley's photograph of the Endurance being crushed by the ice in Antarctica, 1915
James Francis Hurley was born in Sydney in 1885 and by the early 1900's became interested in photography. He earned a reputation for the quality of his photography and the risks he took in securing his images. He joined a number of Antarctic expeditions as the official photographer, the most famous photographs being captured in November 1915. This photograph captured Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship the Endurance slowly being crushed by the ice in the Weddell Sea. Frank Hurley later became an official war photographer attached to the Australian Imperial Forces in the Middle East and France. |
