Shiprock, known as the ‘Winged Rock’ by the Navajo Nation, is a unique rock formation found in the Four Corners Region near Farmington, NM. The formation consists of two parts, the main rock and the spine or pipe. The main formation was formed from an explosive volcanic eruption over 30 million years ago and the spine of the rock is the ancient lava tube that fed the volcano. It rises almost 1583 feet above the Navajo Nation and is considered a monadnock – an isolated rock or mountain that rises abruptly from a virtually flat plain.
