Tessellated Pavement

Tessellated Pavement is a natural wonder, and is named for the tile-like appearance of the rocks along the water. It is a geological phenomenon and is a site to see for nature enthusiasts and visitors who enjoy the uniqueness of Tasmania. In addition to the rock formations, you might spot some Tasmanian crabs and other wildlife living in the crevices of the rocks.

The rocks were formed mostly of siltstone around 300 million years ago and were fractured by the movement of the earth. The presence of salt crystals and consistent erosion by the Tasman ocean and sediment has deepened the pattern to give its startling appearance.

Tessellated Pavement can be seen after a short 0.8km out and back walk from the car park. Tessellated Pavement is just a short 4 minute drive from Eaglehawk Pavilions.
