Commentary: Civil Rights marchers are stopped by heavily-armed Mississippi Highway patrolmen as they attempt to march to Grenada High School. Violence broke out there when the school was integrated on Monday. The marchers turned back willingly when patrolmen promised to protect black students at the school, Grenada, Mississippi.

Sept. 2, 1966 was supposed to be the first day of school in Granada, Mississippi. But at the last minute, the School Board postponed it for 10 days rather than open the doors to 450 black students who had registered to attend the two white schools. The Board claimed the delay was due to paperwork. Even though school hadn’t opened, the high school played its first football game of the season. Some of the black students tried to attend the game. They were beaten, and their car windows were smashed with baseball bats.
Marks: On verso: date stamp and newspaper caption with date stamp affixed.

Materials: Wire photographs were originally transmitted over phonelines, then later, by satellite. They were first used in the early 1920s. Associated Press became a leader with this. After pigment touch-ups, etc., the print is put into a drum (like a drum scanner). The image gets converted into audio tones that are transmitted. The tones are received and beamed onto photo-sensitive paper. Wire photographs are copies without originals---they are hybrid, transmitted objects.
