How Long Does Composite Decking Last? (A Comparison to Wood)

Whether you’re a pro, DIYer, or homeowner, one of the biggest decisions you’ll need to make about an outdoor living space is what type of decking to use. While most decks use treated lumber for the framing, the surface is what’s going to see the most wear and tear.

Since durability is such a key consideration, we’re taking a deep dive into comparing traditional wood and composite decking.

The Lifespan of Composite Decking Compared to Wood

Traditional pressure treated wood decking simply doesn’t last as long as composite. On average, wood decking can last anywhere between 10 and 20 years — the caveat being that you’ll need to keep up with a maintenance schedule to get there. Composite decking, on the other hand, typically lasts roughly 25 years or more with only a fraction of the routine upkeep of wood.

Maintenance of Traditional Wood Compared to Composite Decking

On the topic of upkeep, the regular maintenance of traditional wood decking is often costly and directly impacts the durability of the boards if it’s not followed. Wood decking needs to be sanded and have sealant applied every couple of years to help keep it from degrading. With composite decking, you just need to power wash the deck once a year. Not only is composite decking more durable, but you’ll also save time and money over the life of your outdoor living space.

Moisture and Decking Durability

Water has the potential to play a major role in how a deck degrades over the years. One of the main reasons is because once enough moisture gets into wood deck boards, they expand. Once the expansion starts, cracks will form through the wooden deck boards, damaging the structure of the deck.

Water and moisture pose such a risk to the durability of traditional wooden decking that it’s recommended to apply sealant once or twice throughout the year. Without the regular application of sealant, wood decking can even warp and rot.

How Does Composite Decking Compare to Wood?

In comparison, composite decking is much more resistant to water and moisture. In fact, the Compress Technology™ used in our composite deck boards creates a tight bond between the cap and core. You won’t have to worry about moisture infiltration nor the hassle of applying a sealant.

The Impact of Splintering on Deck Durability

With traditional wood decking, it’s only a matter of time until the material starts to splinter. And every time there’s a splinter or crack, there’s a possibility of moisture finding its way into the material. Plus, splinters can also make it riskier to walk across a deck barefoot and can get to the point where certain boards need to be ripped out and replaced.

Since composite decking encases wood fibers in polymer, the risk of splinters occurring is much less likely. Composite decking can be relied on for its long-lasting durability and resistance to splintering. When you use it for an outdoor living project, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that it will stand the test of time.

Termite Damage Risk for Wood and Composite Decking

Another big concern for the durability of wood decking is the risk of termites. While regular painting and/or sealing can help slow down termites once they’re in the decking, the damage in the long run is often severe. Termite colonies require professional exterminators to be removed from the deck so that they don’t transition to the home itself.

Composite decking is not only more durable than traditional wood, but also resistant to termites. While there’s a very small chance termites could start to eat composite decking, they will almost always prefer natural wood. That’s because traditional wood contains cellulose (termite’s preferred food) and composite decking does not.
