Kyle MacLachlan remembers Twin Peaks costar Piper Laurie: An 'incredible force on screen'

Laurie, who played Catherine Martell on the iconic ABC series, died last week at 91.

Kyle MacLachlan is paying tribute to his Twin Peaks costar Piper Laurie, who died Saturday at 91.

MacLachlan and Laurie starred together on the first two seasons of Twin Peaks, which aired in 1990 and 1991. Laurie played Catherine Martell, the scheming head of the Packard Sawmill, while MacLachlan starred as outsider FBI agent Dale Cooper.

"It's never easy losing a member of the Twin Peaks family, & the passing of #PiperLaurie is no different," MacLachlan, 64, wrote Tuesday on social media. "She was such a caring presence & incredible force on screen. The vivacious energy she brought to Catherine will live on forever. Sending love to her family, friends, & fans."

He also posted a promotional photo from the series and a behind-the-scenes snap of Laurie trimming his hair.

Laurie and MacLachlan both earned double Emmy nominations for the first two seasons of Twin Peaks. Laurie did not return for the 2017 revival, and at the time, she told EW that she was "surprised" she wasn't asked back.

"I made it very clear to David [Lynch] and the team that I would be delighted to come back," Laurie said. "I had a fantastic time on the original and won lots of awards. I'm surprised and I have no idea why I haven't been called back."

Laurie added that she only learned that the revival was happening when it was announced to the public.

"I did send a note to David that I would be delighted to return," she said, "but I think most of the material that I was in on the original didn't really involve the darker aspects of the show, and I can guess maybe that's where David and Mark Frost are going, but I really don't know. My character was more on the silly, comic, fun side."

Frost, who co-created Twin Peaks with Lynch, also paid tribute to Laurie on social media, writing, "She was one of a kind in every way."

In addition to her role on Twin Peaks, Laurie was a three-time Oscar nominee, for The Hustler, Carrie, and Children of a Lesser God.
