Whoa, baby! The Resident star Emily VanCamp teases 'challenges ahead' after shocking CoNic reveal

Warning: This article contains spoilers about Tuesday's episode of The Resident, "Mina's Kangaroo Court."

It took four seasons of The Resident for Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp) and Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) to go from love to marriage — and just one episode to get to the baby carriage!

Yes, there's a CoNic baby on the way, and our guess is that it'll be a baby girl who they will name Jessie, after Nic's sister who died in season 3. But that's only a guess at this point, since producers could drag this pregnancy across multiple seasons just to make us wait (as they do so well).

VanCamp tells EW she's excited to explore this new chapter in their lives, though she teases that not everything will be smooth sailing.

"It definitely took Nic and Conrad a while to get to this new phase, and now that they have arrived, it feels like things are happening very quickly," she says. "But I think they are in a place where they welcome the challenge and are ready to start this new chapter. That doesn't mean there won't be challenges along the way."

Although she remains mum about further details regarding the baby and the birth, VanCamp does confirm one exciting bit of news: "We will definitely find out if it's a girl or a boy, but I'm not sure what the timeline will be in terms of meeting the baby."

Executive producer Andrew Chapman also shares some insight into the decision of having Nic and Conrad expand their family this season.

"We wanted to show them this season as a married couple who are working together at the same place and a little drama here and there," he says. "We want to show what a strong marriage looks like, especially when they're doing heroic things like saving lives. But at the same time, we felt like we needed to give audiences something else. We want to give them more by expanding that relationship, and the next obvious step was having a baby. We're going to play out her pregnancy, but I want to warn you that things will get super-crazy around episode 5. It has nothing to do with COVID, but know that episode 5 is going to knock your socks off, in a good way. It's intense, but I know fans are going to scream. She's going to be pregnant a good long time, but I know everyone's going to groove on this."

The glimmer of hope from Nic and Conrad's baby is what's needed at Chastain Park Memorial amid all the sadness and loss caused by the pandemic.

Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) is dealing with heavy emotions after the death of his father from COVID-19. He regrets not being able to care for his father directly due to living in a different state, and the challenges faced by hospitals caring for underserved communities also weigh heavily on him.

"Devon is going through a lot this season, and through his story we wanted to explore the inequality in health care right now," Chapman says. "His dad was a cab driver in New York struggling to make a living. He's so proud of his son for all of his accomplishments but, [his dad] had to keep working, which is how he got COVID and why he died. This is going to resonate for Devon for quite some time. He's going to struggle to get past that and the self-recrimination. So many Americans are struggling with similar situations right now as their loved ones head to the ICU and many disappear from their lives. It's heartbreaking, but we thought it was important to show that and how doctors are also struggling when they lose patients. The mental health of our doctors is going to play out for a couple more episodes."

With Logan Kim (Rob Yang) finally and completely out of the picture, where does that leave Cain (Morris Chestnut)?

"We're going to redeem Cain, but at the same time, every television show needs a villain. And Morris plays a great villain," Chapman says. "But we're going to redeem him and we're going make him more human. There are going to be moments of ambiguity for his character to keep everyone wondering if he's good or if he's bad. What path will he choose? This is what we'll explore this season with Cain, and you're never too sure about whether he will choose the light or the dark. He will go back and forth. Just wait until episode 3!"
