The filming for Spider-Man: No Way Home took place in New York City and Atlanta. Back in January 2021, a Twitter thread made by a DoorDash delivery man generated considerable buzz around the matter of Garfield’s involvement in the film. In the tweets, the person mentioned having delivered food to the actor in Atlanta. He also revealed details of the encounter, including how “agitated” the Hollywood celebrity appeared. The user mentioned that alcohol was delivered and that’s why Garfield’s ID had to be checked.

This was a fabricated detail that the actor himself would later clarify. With the delivery man’s tweets and other subsequent leaks, people would develop in their minds a vague idea of Garfield’s reprised role. For nearly a year, the world was left in the dark about the delivery disaster. Then came the day Andrew Garfield appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast after the much-anticipated Spider-Man: No Way Home unveiling.

In addition to discussing a variety of topics including his involvement in the movie, the actor addressed all of the social media leaks that led up to the revelation. It was at this point that The Social Network alum confirmed the DoorDash delivery story.

He began by stating the following:

“This is my first night in Atlanta. […] I ordered takeout for us, and COVID is high. It’s literally my first night there, and it’s great. I get to wear a mask everywhere. I get to wear a hat. Nobody’s ever going to know I’m here, and I’m going to really be low-key and whatnot. So the guy comes to the door, the delivery guy — sweet seeming guy, nice seeming dude — and I open the door, I’ve got my mask on, my hat, and I’m like, ‘Thanks, bro.’”

Complications arose the moment the actor was asked to show his ID. This piqued the star’s interest since he had never seen a delivery service request identification proof for meal delivery. Because the guy was standing too close to the door, Garfield also advised him to move a few steps back to comply with COVID-19 constraints and social distancing standards. The celebrity’s hesitancy may have come off as rude, but the Hacksaw Ridge alum was simply being cautious.

Andrew Garfield’s Heartfelt Response

The strange request made Andrew Garfield question the delivery person, “Sorry, man, why do you need my ID?” To this, the man would reply that he needed to verify the actor’s identity. This placed Garfield in a predicament as his DoorDash account didn’t have his name on it. This would lead to the person making a fabricated statement:

“He’s like, ‘Yeah, ’cause you got alcohol.’ And I’m like, ‘No, I didn’t get alcohol. I didn’t get any alcohol, man. I got some tacos.’”

Garfield was apprehensive that something “fishy” was going on. Ultimately, the star persuaded his friend to present the delivery man with his ID to put a stop to the situation. The actor would later learn about the comments made against him on Twitter.

Andrew Garfield clarified why he wasn’t being “rude” to the delivery person on Happy Sad Confused:

“I definitely wasn’t [rude]. I did ask to do social distancing, but I obviously upset the man and I didn’t mean to and I apologize for anything that may have been misconstrued as being rude. I don’t like upsetting people, but it just became this whole thing, and then I think he got in trouble. I don’t know.”

After articulating a proper apology, the actor concluded the story by stating, “I know what you were up to. You were being sneaky.”
