THE VOICE OF FREEMASONRY IN NORTHWEST OHIO SINCE 1916 (USPS 632-860) Vol. 107 No. 7 March 2023

Page 2 March 2023 - - In the 16th District, WB Richard Babcock of Roby Lodge #534 is pictured above (front) receiving his 70-Year Service Award. Joining him were (left to right): Kevin Babcock, MWB Charles Murphy, RWB Lon Burton, WB Marty Sowers and David Babcock. Members of Lotus Chapter #477 (above) went together to see the movie “80 for Brady” on February 4th. A dinner together afterward further extended the fun! Kudos to Oak Harbor Lodge #495 for supporting fellow Ottawa County Lodge Oliver H Perry Lodge at its Annual Inspection (pictured at left), and walking away with the 11th District’s Traveling Gavel. Poker players at Gibson Lodge’s Super Bowl Party are pictured above hard at work. A portion of the pot goes for the lodge window replacement fund. There was great representation of 11th District Brothers and their ladies to share Robert Kauffman’s 70-Year Award at the Grand Master’s Reception in Sarasota, Florida, as pictured above. At left, members of Phoenix, Rubicon and Damascus Collingwood Lodges were pictured building brotherhood by combining forces to confer the Master Mason degree. Pictured after the event above, the state’s newest Master Mason, a member of Phoenix Lodge #123, is shown receiving his first Grand Master’s pin from 11th District Education Officer WB Jerel Fish. Looking on are Rubicon Lodge officers Brother Steve Robison, Brother Greg Bowlus and Past Master, WB Robbie Franks.

Your first impulse will be to silence him, but I advise you to think carefully before doing so. He probably is the only one listening! Universal Brotherhood “When the world has been plunged in savagery and superstition, drenched in blood, when cruelty has immured the disciples of civil and religious liberty and stretched them upon the rack, the Masonic sign of distress has always been recognized on the battlefield or in the torture chamber and with in the kinship of blood and brotherhood.” Evening As we grow older and the shadows begin to lengthen, and the leaves which seem so thick in youth, above our heads grow thin and show the sky beyond, as those in the ranks in front drop away and we come in sight, as we all must, of the eternal rifle pits beyond, a man begins to feel that among the really precious things of life, more lasting and more substantial than many of the objects of ambition here, is the love of those whose friendship he prizes. - Exchange Needed Most Today the greatest thing in the world is not money, nor big buildings, nor armies of atomic power, but character. The world needs men who can be depended upon, who put others before themselves, and who are not afraid to stand up and be counted; those who are able to add something to the uplifting of political life, something to the brotherhood of social life, something to the practical efficiency of spiritual life. Then we shall have done mankind a real service.

Hurray! It’s getting to be planting season again and a time for getting out of the house and outdoors more regularly. We’ll be planning some outdoor group events for the brethren and families. I’m open and anxious to hear your ideas. It’s also a great time to revisit old friends and make new ones. The past two years of COVID restrictions set a new pattern of life … One of couch sitting, mind numbing TV watching, snacking and being homebodies. I challenge us all to revisit that previous lifestyle and change back to the “good ‘ol days” of self-entertainment, personal engagement and involvement. Engage in some mental activities to stimulate the mind and refresh your social acuity. Your lodge is just the place to dust off the cobwebs of the mind of the past two years. Stretch the mental faculties and social skills of the past. It’s painless, I guarantee, and, in fact, most pleasant and rewarding. We are a non-judgement place. We’d love to see you. Bellevue #273 has challenged surrounding lodges to a canned food drive. Let’s re-stock our local communities and have fun in the process! The lodge that raises the most items and/or funds will be the recipient of the “Golden Can” and bragging rights for the year. Bellevue members can help out by going through their pantries and looking for items that are in excess or no longer of use to you at home. Please remember, no expired items! You can either drop off your donations at the lodge or contact our officers to arrange a pick-up time. We have a large number of candidates coming through the ranks, and welcome everyone to attend their degrees when able. Building a fraternity means building relationships, and that can’t happen unless you make an effort to meet our new members. Our preparations continue for the statewide open house in April. Consider bringing friends and family out to the lodge to see our updated amenities and share Freemasonry with them. GIBSON LODGE No. 301 F. & A.M. 34 Pleasant Street Wakeman, OH 44889 James S. George Washington once said, “So far as I am acquainted with the principles and doctrines of Freemasonry, I conceive it to be founded in benevolence and to be exercised only for the good of mankind.” To all brothers who are sick or cannot attend our meetings, our fraternal thoughts are with you. I believe in four seasons. I believe that winter’s tough, but spring’s coming. I believe that there’s a growing season. And I think that you realize that in life, you grow. You get better. – Steve Southerland Everyday Living Jesus, who taught men how to live life abundantly, twice recommended a strategy for effective living in a single New Testament chapter—the sixth of Matthew. He said, in teaching his disciples the Lord’s Prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Then, a little later, after asking for this one day’s supply of nourishment, he declared, “Take therefore no thought for the morrow; for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” A Mighty Cause If we think about the long past, the efforts of Masons through the centuries to perpetuate the ideals and principles of Masonry, the courage and determination of Masons to defy despotism, the insistence that man walk in dignity as an individual, we will be more conscious of our obligation to strive to make Masonry a force. We want our children and grandchildren to live in a world in which moral and spiritual values are stressed. We want to preserve for future generations those ideals which account for our country’s greatness. How much do we want them? To the extent that we will work for them while there is yet time? To the extent that we will keep the flame of liberty burning brightly in our lodges and in our minds and hearts? If sacred teachings are lost to future generations, must we not assume blame for such a tragic loss? As Masons who have assumed sacred obligations to God and humanity, we cannot stand idly by in a neutral corner. We are engaged in a mighty cause. The realization of this truth, by every Master Mason must be the clarion call for an alert and militant Freemasonry.

Edon Lodge was fortunate to win the traveling trophy at our building brother’s inspection; Edon represented our lodge with eight brothers attending Bryan’s #215 inspection. However, if we hope to secure the trophy for the year, we will need to come in full force for the inspection of Omega #564. Every one of you should have received a letter from me outlining a few items, one of which is our fund-raiser. If you need any help with ordering items, please let me know, so we can help you. Also, please let us know if you have any suggestions of what you would like to see added to our fund-raiser store. Most importantly, our Hundred and Fifty-year Reconsecration ceremony will be held at the Bryan Masonic Temple in Bryan, starting at 10:30 a.m. Please join the Grand Lodge of Ohio and the Grand Master of Ohio, Most Worshipful Brother Steven M. Grindle, as we celebrate Edon’s milestone with a reconsecration ceremony that should exceed all expectations. Please RSVP ASAP, if you plan on attending. It is my strongest desire to see each of you there. Fraternally, Jessee M. Spillman Transportation Driver- Part Time Recently retired but still seeking an opportunity to pick up a few hours a week? Hope to see as many of you there as possible. Getting back to the fundamentals, that is something that we should do as Masons and as lodges. Many times, in our desire to grow and strengthen, we get complacent in them. The foundation that supports us are the basic fundamentals. Like with a building, the foundation dictates how high it can go. The stronger the foundation, the higher you can build. If you build higher than the foundation can support, the building is in jeopardy of falling, causing you to have to shore up the foundation to save the building. Which, at this point, can be very difficult, and if not done right, can have bad results. However, it can be done. If you have a strong foundation, the sky is the limit. Fraternally, Douglas Cook Jr Worshipful Master Liberty Center Lodge #518 Liberty Center (Continued in Column 2) “The capacity to believe is the most significant and fundamental human faculty, and the most important thing about any man is what he believes in the depth of his being. This is the thing that makes him what he is; the thing that organizes him and feeds him; the thing that keeps him going in the face of untold circumstances; the thing that gives him resistance and drive. Let neutrality, confusion, indifference, or skepticism enter this inner place, and the very springs of life will cease to flow.” – Hugh Stevenson Tigner Public Relations In modern business a favorable public opinion is regarded as a valuable asset. The time is gone when industrial tycoons selfishly ignored the rights of others and arbitrarily went their way in defiance of the general welfare. Times have changed. Public relations today are planned with care and zealously developed. Big business, as a rule, tries to meet the wishes and demands of its customers. The public relations department has become an important cog in present day life. If healthy public relations are good for business; is it not equally true of other phases of this modern world? The Grand Lodge of California has recognized this trend by creating a Committee on Masonic Information. Grand Master Alfred F. Breslauer states: “Its objectives will be to provide the press with data concerning the activities of Grand Lodge. News items and pictures are prepared and distributed for publication. There is no doubt that good public relations will result from this service, as the general public will have a better opportunity to know something of the positive approach of our fraternity.” The need of such a service is often evidenced by the garbled accounts of Masonic activities as published in the daily press. These errors are not intentional, but are due to lack of correct information of knowledge of Masonic background and long time experience. Masonry has nothing to hide. It has much to offer of general interest. This idea of a committee to disseminate authentic Masonic information merits deep consideration and close study by all Masonic bodies. It is well worth a try. – Exchange If You Can … If you can start the day without caffeine, If you can get going without pills, If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains. If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same thing every day, and be grateful for it. If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time, If you can overlook it when those whom you love, take it out on you, when through no fault of yours, something went wrong. If you can take criticism and blame without resentment. If you can ignore a friend’s limited education and never correct him, If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor one. If you can relax without liquor, If you can sleep without the aid of drugs. If you can honestly say, that deep in your heart, you have no prejudice against any color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, politics, or race; Then, my friend, you are almost as good as your dog!!

Moody A Mason and A Man My Brother, Masonry means much more than the wearing of a pin, Or carrying a paid-up dues receipt. So the Lodge will let you in. You may wear an emblem on your coat. From your finger flash a ring. But if you’re not sincere at heart, this doesn’t mean a thing. It’s merely an outward sign to show the world that you belong To this great fraternal brotherhood that teaches right from wrong. What really counts lies buried deep within the human breast. Till Masonic teaching brings it out and puts it to the test. If you practice out of Lodge the things you learn within, Be just and upright to yourself and to your fellowmen. Console a brother when he’s sick and assist him when in need. Without a thought of personal reward for any act or deed. Walk and act in such a way that the world without can see That only the best can meet the test, laid down by Masonry. Be always faithful to your trust and do the best you can. Then you can proudly tell the world You’re a Mason and a Man. written by C. E. Reynolds, Delia Lodge No. 419 Kansas

The Memorial Lodge does not do any degree work, but only funeral services. In the performance of the funeral rites for a deceased brother, Lucas County Memorial Lodge is governed by the provision of the Ohio Masonic Code rating to Masonic funerals. The service is rendered in the spirit of brotherly love and charity. Also, the Lucas Memorial Lodge is authorized by the Grand Lodge of Ohio to collect and destroy unwanted aprons awarded to Masonic brethren for service in a leadership role after a brother has passed and the awards are no longer desired by the family. Congratulations are in order for Bellevue #273 (Fellow Craft), Gibson #301 (Fellow Craft), Fostoria #288 (Fellow Craft), Roby #534 (Entered Apprentice), Perseverance #329 (Master Mason), Tiffin #77 (Master Mason) and Mt. Vernon #64 (Entered Apprentice). These lodges all had their inspections in February and all did outstanding degree work! Well done, gentlemen! Inspections continue, as we only have nine more inspections within the district, and I’m certain the work will be equally impressive. Looking out a little further, the 16th District Grand Master’s Reception will be Friday, May 19, at Germans Villa in Vermilion. Please contact me or any of the other district officers to obtain your tickets. The evening is shaping up to be a wonderful showcase for Masonry in northwest and north central Ohio, and we’d love to have you join us as we honor MWB Grindle and this year’s Grand Lodge officers. Lastly, as is custom at inspections, we take up a collection to go toward the First Lady’s charity. This year, First Lady Jane Ann Grindle has chosen to support Ohio Masonic youth groups and the great work they’re doing in the state of Ohio. As a Senior DeMolay myself, I am thrilled to assist in these efforts. These youth groups deserve ALL of the support we can give them. Without DeMolay, I would not be the husband, son, father or brother I am today, and most definitely would not be involved with Freemasonry. Members of these groups learn invaluable skills that increase their confidence and prepare them to lead! Just as important as financial support, perhaps even more so, is the support you can give by volunteering your time to be an advisor. If you have not done so yet, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the youth groups operating in your area. Reach out to them and see if they need help. Sometimes, just having ONE extra adult available to assist them could mean the difference between success or failure; between having an event or not; between keeping their doors open or closing down. Please reach out – they would love to hear from you! Fraternally, Jordan A. T. Lawrence, President MWB Steven M. Grindle (Jane Anne) (419) 509-7875 [email protected] Grand Chaplain RWB Mark D. In the heart of every true Mason there is something — call it instinct, principle or what you may — that doesn’t permit him to be so well satisfied with those things he does for himself as with those he does for others. That is why all members of the Craft now living, owe a debt of gratitude to those who devote their lives to the teachings of Masonry. What God Is Like God is like General Electric — He lights up your path. God is like Hallmark Cards — He cared enough to send the very best. Shriners International has granted permission for Zenobia to change the date. Please mark your calendar accordingly. ATTEST: JOHN MANN, RECORDER Zenobia Website: www.zenobiashriners.com Greetings Nobles, A great time was had by all at the Walleye game. For those who were not able to make it, our very own Noble Hank Briggs was the Hometown Hero. It was great to see his friends and family there to support him. With our most recent Friendship Night, there were many new faces to learn about Masonry and Shriners. I am hoping we will see many new candidates for our Spring Ceremonial in May. If you know of someone interested in Shriners, tell them about your experience and how you are involved with Zenobia. Give them a petition and create a new member to our great organization. Please come out and support the 71st Zenobia Shrine Circus, March 16 to 19, as we need this to be a successful fund-raising event. This is our main fund-raising event for the Temple, and is only successful with your help to promote it, as well as to help with your services. There are many opportunities for you to volunteer, even if for only one show. There are jobs that can be done while sitting and others when standing. If you able to find some time to volunteer, please contact myself or Illustrious Dennis Gable. Other events coming up: Saturday, April 1, include supporting Northern Light Lodge’s pancake breakfast, then come out to Zenobia for our Meat Feztival (formerly known as our Meat Raffle) to fill your freezer with plenty of meat, as this will be a lucky day with your winning lucky number. Tickets are selling fast and must be purchased from Illustrious Ty Stout (419-355-3996) - call or text. After this event, others of us may then be going to the 11th District Grand Master’s Reception that evening to honor our own Noble, Grand Master, MWB Steven Grindle. What a great day for Masonry, fellowship and brotherhood!! Please spread the word about our annual Children’s Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, April 2. Invite your grandkids, children and/or neighbors, as this is an open event to the public. The John Hoffman Memorial Golf Outing will be here before we know it, in August. I have challenged the Divan team to get their teams organized before April and now I challenge you to start registering your teams. We have a new location this year at Hidden Hills Golf Course with a 2 p.m. tee time and dinner to follow. We are still looking for a janitor to help clean our facility and setup up for events; this position would likely be 10 to 15 hours/week. If you have a financial background and would like to share your skills as treasurer with our Divan team and your Nobles, please contact me for more information. Last, not by not least, Lady Melissa and I would like to thank those that went on our Potentate’s trip to the Bahamas, as it was a great time had by all. New friendships were made with our brothers from Aladdin Shrine and the warm weather was WONDERFUL. Thank you also to Mark and Patty Froelich, from Aladdin, to allow US to coordinate this event together. Serving the Need, Todd Miller, Potentate 2023 What do we know? We know: The Shrine Circus is almost here! You know the dates and performance times. Spread the word. We know: Costs. With the reserved seat price of $20 or $25, it is a great bargain! These are fantastic prices for the most enjoyable family fun. Compare with live events at Huntington or even a movie, this is a terrific family value. We know: What a memorable experience it is. But those close to you do not. If fact, those you are around do not realize that this family friendly entertainment will soon be here. It is a well kept fact that needs to be spread all over. YOU need to inform everyone you are near. We know: Attendance is key. Our costs are nearly all set. Now the effort is to get people at the circus. Post our flyers in well traveled areas, hand out the business cards to young families you see at the grocery store, school events or your grandkids activities. We know: You are the most important salesperson. You are the one to get one more family to attend. Please share “the circus will be here” to strangers, as well as those close to you. You can reach families you know who will truly enjoy the activities of the circus. It is now up to YOU. We know: Time is running out. Promote attendance at the circus. Share the information with anyone and everyone. This is our last chance to fill the arena. Talk up the circus! THE CIRCUS IS NOW IN YOUR HANDS. 1-800-GO-CIRCUS UNDER THE BIG TOP Fellowship. When I looked up the word’s meaning I found, “Friendly association, especially with people who share one’s interests.” The example of the word used in a sentence, “They valued fun and good fellowship as the cement of the community.” Does that sentence sound a bit familiar? Does it remind you of a line in one of our degrees as it pertains to one of the working tools of a Mason? It should, fellowship is the cement of the community. It binds us together as brothers and Nobles, especially when we share a common interest. This month, as Zenobia Shriners, we have one of the greatest chances for fellowship afforded to us, the Shrine Circus! March Madness is here! The Circus tips off on the 16th and It’s one of the best chances we have to work together, bringing smiles to the faces of children, both at the shows and those receiving care from our Shrine Hospitals. So, take the chance to be a kid again. The chance to live your childhood dream of running away to join the circus. Enjoy the smiles, the cheers, the laughter and applause when you volunteer to work together with your fellow Nobles and the community at large. Join the circus! Peace, Mark continues on the 17th, 18th and 19th, at the Glass City Convention Center. We need volunteers on those days. If you haven’t signed up, give us a call and we will find a nice job for you. Around halftime (midMarch) our Sportsmen’s Extravaganza drawing tickets will be available for purchase. Ticket sellers – we need you! Let’s make this a successful event with massive ticket sales. March daytime luncheon for retirees (and anyone who can attend) will be Wednesday, the 15th, at 11:30. Please RSVP, so we know how much food to prepare. We have a wonderful facility that goes unused during weekdays, and we need to generate groups or units that meet during the day for those who don’t drive at night. And last, the April stated meeting has been moved to the FIRST Thursday in April. That is, it will be held on April 6, at 7:30 p.m. Keep the faith. Best regards, John Mann

He also asked Nobles and ladies to support Friendship Nights by bringing a potential candidate, if at all possible. Think membership! Anne Fravor called from California and said to say “hi” to everyone. Think circus – your help is needed. Contact Zenobia. At any one performance there are approximately 100 volunteers. In recent years, many have chosen to park their vehicles near the convention center. This is a personal choice. Please note that the “parking under the convention center” is now privately operated and 100 spaces are reserved for hotel valet. Since space is limited, please note there are many more local garages with prices of $10, $8 or even $5, depending on distance from the Huntington Center. Also, after 5 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Monday, street parking is free. We will still offer our parking shuttle service from the lot at 1600 Madison Avenue. This is at no charge. Please drop your passengers off at convention center and then park the car at the Imagine School lot. Note that the shuttle will start 2 hours prior to performance and will slow down about 1 hour prior since workers are to be on-site by that time. Return to your vehicle will be handled in reverse until all cars are gone. Please note that once you park, it may take up to 15 minutes for the shuttle to return to the lot. If it goes past that amount of time, then call (419) 464-2015 and we will be sure to return there. Just be patient and all will work out. Parking for Circus Help Gimmesimulaters donation to Shrine. Page 14 March 2023 Every parade needs a Mason and Shriner there … let it be YOU!! Brothers and Nobles, let us say a big Thank You to Norm Burrow for all his years of being the parade marshal for Zenobia. I hope to fill your shoes. It will be tough though. To all … it’s about time to get ready to bring smiles to many and let people know we are still out here doing what we do for children who need medical help. I love bringing smiles to the public. I know many of the units have your parade schedules that you like to attend, and which ones give a nice donation. Keep doing the great job you all do. It is my goal to set up a website with info on parades, even ones we don’t go to. The town name, name of parade and, most importantly, the name of the contact person of each organization as well as their phone number and email. We need a list of who-what-where- and when, so we can share with everyone. A Mason and a Shriner should be in every parade. More info on the parade website will be coming soon. Any parade list you already have, please forward to me, so I can combine and post them. Please email this information to me at How[email protected]. Also, if you have paper copies, you can put them in the mail slot for the Mystics at Zenobia. It’s a work in progress. Let’s all make it to as many parades as you can and let me know which ones you plan on attending, so we can recognize your unit. Remember, ALL parades must be approved by the Potentate for insurance purposes. Howard Shirling, Parade Marshal 2023 Parade Season Is Upon Us Lancer meetings are fun and enjoyable, mostly due to great fellowship, plus we get things done, too! You have thought about becoming a member, or else you probably would not be reading this article. Come join us on the third Monday, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Zenobia. As always, need to call Barry or Karl, if planning on eating with us. Parades are under discussion. Plans are to get an earlier start and make a stronger showing in 2023. We have more “little red cars,” if you are able to join us. We have members who prefer “fixing” over “driving.” If you are one of those people who enjoys being able to work on mechanical things, this group is for Lancers Greetings from Ottawa County. Remember the Shrine Circus is March 16 to 19. Plan to help with as many shows as you can. Tell everyone about the circus, get tickets and spread the word. Attend other units and clubs. Join in the activities listed in the Hadji. Also remember the Hillbilly Initiation and Soup Spectacular at Zenobia on Sunday, March 12, at 1 p.m. Lyle A Whale of A Club. OCSC I’d like to share a story with you about making a difference, one day at a time. An old man walking along the beach littered with hundreds of starfish, that had washed ashore during an early morning storm. He started throwing them back, when a local resident, amused at the man’s futile attempt, asked, “What are you doing?” The man responded, “Saving starfish!” The resident responded. “Don’t you know there are so many. You’ll never make a difference.” As the old man continued his walk, he stopped and picked up another starfish, and after throwing it back into the sea, he turned to the resident and said, “Made a difference with that one, didn’t I??” Sometimes it’s hard to make a difference in life. But, we, as Road Runners, can make a difference in children’s lives, without asking for anything in return. It might be the story they share about their school, favorite sports team, an instrument they play, something about their pet, where they go for fun, movies or even a piece of candy they like. The smile on their face, the hug you get when you return them back home or the thanks you get from their parents, is more than enough payment for the time it takes to help them in their time Roadrunners The Divan, business manager and trustees are working on a date in spring for a Temple work day. Outdoor work would be grounds clean up, trimming, mulching, possible work around the grill shed and fire pit. Indoor projects that can be done now or at the work day are general cleaning, hanging pictures and a shelf. Give a hand in keeping your Temple what we all can be proud of when we have guests. Speak with a trustee or our business manager on which project you would like to help on. Thanks to the Pit Masters unit for the donation and installation of a new kitchen faucet, a kitchen wall clock and new lava rock for the grill. All will be put to good use. trustee Report of need. If you’re a Master Mason or Shriner, please consider joining our team of drivers. The time you spend will change your life and theirs, too. Respectively submitted, Tom Hilton dispatcherdispatch@ zenobiashriners.com 419-967-0081 cell you. May looks like our first parade, so do not wait! Our “look” is still under discussion. Members are asked to attend the meetings and give us your thoughts. We are close to setting our direction, so please help us get there. Attend our meetings, come join this iconic group, every third Monday. Hope to see you there!

MARCH – the first thing I think of is March winds! But where I live, that is an everyday thing, year around! March also means that we can get our camping units ready for the camping season (maybe next month?) We had a great January campin! We met at Kathy’s Korner in Arcadia, on January 15. Twelve members and two guests, as well as our Divan Rep. Scott Harder! A great turnout for our small group and, as always, good food! Thank you Rod and Ellen! February found us at the Country Farmhouse in Wayne, Ohio. Jean knows what we like and planned our February meeting there. And here is a invitation to anyone with any type of camping unit – come out and join us at any of our events!! We always have a good time. Just give our President John Weslow a call at 419-618-1905 or email wes[email protected] and he will fill you in with what’s happening and when! Until next month, KEEP THE CAMPFIRES BURNING! Rod Z Findlay EnOBia CaMpERs shrine Club Greetings Nobles, This is it, the month has arrived, we have our biggest event of the year, the CIRCUS. Help is always needed in every facet; ad sales, ticket sales, ticket takers at the doors, concessions, souvenirs, ushers, etc. Please volunteer as much as you are able, it helps the bottom line. Much more is and will be taking place in and around Zenobia this year. Do yourself a favor and get out of the house, spend time with your Shrine family and have a great time. Findlay SC hopes to have a few events of our own this year. Please keep an eye out for announcements and attend these gatherings of likeminded Nobles and ladies. Having fun is the key to a longer and rewarding life, so let’s work together to achieve just that. Zenobia meets the second Thursday of the month and Findlay SC meets on the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m., after the Blue Lodge breakfast in the Findlay Masonic Complex, 303 Osborn Avenue. Please call Jim / 419-421-6396 or Chuck / 419-306-9559 with any inquiries. Illustrious Sir Todd Miller and the Divan have another good year going. Taking the reins as a new Potentate is always challenging, but this is an especially trying time, when you consider working with a new Business Manager/Recorder, a new Secretary and a soon change in financial leadership. Zenobia is up to the challenge. Working your way through the Divan line helps develop a closeness and friendship. That, combined with the help from the other temple officers, trustees and knowing you can bounce ideas and ask for direction from the Past Potentates makes it a team effort. We at Zenobia are fortunate to have many dedicated Nobles to help us along the way. Membership is the lifeline in any organization. Its essential that we replace ourselves by bringing in a new member, which allow us to continue to do great things. Friendship Nights are a great way to treat a prospective member and their wife to a FREE dinner and have them learn more our fraternity and philanthropy. We also have to retain our existing membership. Zenobia is going to try something new, a Meet and Greet luncheon, to acquaint each other and perhaps find activities during the day, for those who are retired or can break away from work. The first one was held February 15, and if successful, will be held again March 15. Please support the Zenobia Shrine Circus, March 16 to 19, and the many activities that you see listed in this Hadji. Bernie Welniak, P.P., 330 #8

It will include the chapter, council and commandery orders, except for the Super Excellent Master Degree. This year’s Tri-Fold came out later than anticipated; hopefully next year’s calendar will come out a bit sooner. Our inspector gave us an excellent rating, which I felt was generous. How can I thank Charley Ottney for his fine performance with the Principal Sojourner’s journey? Who else will attempt to tackle such a rich part? Thanks to L. Gozdowski for his constant devotion. REMARKS Companions, I would like to thank all the companions who helped make our annual inspection a success. It is always great to have a great turnout and great degree work for our candidates. Henry David Thoreau said, “To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.” Companions work diligently to make your Masonic teachings dominate your lives. Please continue to support our chapters and capitular events, so we can build stronger chapters and districts. Until we meet again, keep our sick and distressed companions in your thoughts and prayers, and may the Great Architect watch over you and keep you safe. Paul Peters III, KYCH Toledo Commandery As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. – John F. Kennedy Which Are You? Some members keep their Chapters strong, While others join and just belong; Some dig right in, and serve with pride, Some go along, just for the ride. Some volunteer to do their share, While some lay back and just don’t care; On meeting nights some always show While there are those who never go. Some always pay their dues ahead, Some get behind for months, instead. Some do their best, some build, some make, Some never give, but always take, Some drag, some pull, some don’t, some do. CONSIDER, which of these are you? Founded in the Hearts of Men “The ancient temple of King Solomon has crumbled into ruins; obelisks and pyramids, built for the purpose of defying mutations and decay of ages, have disappeared, temples and cities, perfected by the science of Masonry (the glory and pride of the world for centuries), have gone to decay and ruin since our order has had a name and place upon the earth. Nations have risen and fallen, established kingdoms and empires overthrown, but Masonry still survives; the most ancient, the most honorable, and the most humane organization — except the church since the foundation of the earth. “Be unselfish. That is the first and final commandment for those who would be useful and happy in their usefulness. If you think of yourself only, you cannot develop because you are choking the source of development, which is spiritual expansion through thought for others.” – Charles W. Eliot

Valley of The Firelands, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. It is neither the Feast of the Passover nor the institution of the Sacrament of Holy Communion, although it commemorates both holy days. The Feast of the Passover commemorates the escape of the Hebrews from Egypt, when God, smiting the firstborn of the Egyptians, passed over the houses of the Israelites. Thus the blood of the paschal lamb, which had been used to mark the houses of the Israelites, has symbolized redemption. For observance of this feast, Jesus gathered his disciples in the night in which he was betrayed. In their midst he instituted the sacrament, which Christians revere as The Last Supper. Chapters of Rose Croix also observe this beautiful and symbolic celebration of the Feast of the Paschal Lamb as a memorial service, honoring our brethren who have passed to their eternal reward during the preceding year. In spirit, we seem to sense their presence at the Mystic Banquet as we seek to strengthen the ties of brotherly love which bind our hearts in holy remembrance. Wednesday, April 5, 7:00 p.m. – VoTF Board of Trustees monthly Board Meeting at Bucyrus Lodge #139, 1224 S. Sandusky Avenue in Bucyrus, OH 44820. REMARKS This is the beginning of a busy time. The next few weeks feature The Firelands’ Rite On! event, Ohio Council of Deliberation and Feast of the Paschal Lamb. That makes it a busy, busy month, in addition to our normal degree schedule. We certainly hope you join us or meet us at all the events on the calendar. Your attendance truly makes us happy! We love promoting all of Freemasonry, but particularly Scottish Rite. That brings up our hope you will support all the bodies of Masonry you can. Every Masonic body loves helpers as well as observers. Stay safe and healthy. We enjoyed honoring our Master Masons, February potluck and working with the Masons of Oliver Hazard Perry Lodge. We look to have a good showing at the Northwest Region EOP #4 Exemplification at the Findlay Masonic Center on March 10. This is a Friday evening event. March is the beginning of the inspection season. Port Clinton’s inspection is Tuesday, May 9. Let’s support our District 6 and 8 chapters, and also see others doing the work. The next day, Saturday, March 11, is a line officers meeting and the last St. Patrick’s Day dance. I look forward to this night out with many OES friends, Port Clinton OES and thank the Century Club for my dinner and Port Clinton Chapter for my husband’s ticket. Tuesday, March 14, we will hear our Associate Conductress, Marilyn Little, give the AC speech and balloting demonstration. Let’s wear green, Irish colors or shamrocks for fun. On Saturday, March 25, we gather again for morning social time with the Masons of OHP Lodge and giving our Masonic building some loving care. On Saturday, March 4, we will be having a district initiation with several girls joining. Maumee Assembly will be selling flowers and gift certificates to Sadowski’s Greenhouse on Airport Highway, and Sylvania will be selling Krispy Kreme Donuts. We also will be supporting Northern Light Lodge’s annual Kidney Foundation pancake breakfast. Maumee is very proud of member, Cadence, as she had the idea to make gift baskets for residents of hospice. She has volunteered at hospice for almost a year and sees how getting things lights up the resident’s day. She decided to put together baskets for Valentine’s Day. Her vision was to do 15 baskets, but hoped to get enough to put together 30. I am happy to say she was able to brighten the day for more than 30 residents between the two hospice locations. Along with the baskets, she was able to give them vases of flowers. We are sure the residents had a better Valentine’s Day, thanks to her thoughtfulness. The district is looking forward to continuing to grow, make new friends and support the community. The title, “What were you doing 10 years ago today?” was a little thought provoking. The author then goes on to write about her trials through her working career. But it does hold true for personal life, as well, and got me thinking. In each of our meetings we have done a different decade of facts and information. Ten years ago, I went in as Worthy Matron for the first time; I figured that would be my only time. I then started through line again a couple of years later, to have to pull out because I was doing my master’s program and I had a conflicting schedule. In April of 2023, it will be 10 years since I ran a marathon (26.2 miles) in the rain the entire time. In the last 10 years I have gotten married, changed jobs, did a lot of traveling, added another degree to my education and moved a couple of times, just to name a few. I have not run another full marathon (not because I don’t want to, just that time thing), but I haven’t stopped running. WOW, to think about how fast time has flown by. This year’s motto is all about thinking about the past, because the present is your gift to reach for the future. Take a look back on the last 10 years and think about your journey to where you are right now. What have you done? What have you learned along the way? What have you achieved? How has your family grown/changed? Who are you as a person? I keep a list of accomplishments in the last year next to my yearly goals. I have items from creating/designYONDOTA CHAPTER No. 317 O.E.S. In recognition of that, many of our districts around Ohio will be hosting a new member initiation around March. This will culminate in the performance of our DeMolay Degree, the second ceremony of our initiation, at the Loveland Castle in Loveland, on Saturday, April 1. Any Master Mason is welcome to attend these initiations, and we encourage every Ohio Master Mason to come and experience DeMolay. Our theme this time revolved around love. The love we have for each other, our community, and our Ohio Rainbow family. We enjoyed making our Conversation Heart crafts, that we were able to share with friends, family and our friends around our communities. The girls and advisors put on a lovely presentation to Eu-Tah Commandery’s women and guests about the importance of Rainbow, and how it is related to our Masonic family. Many thanks to Dad Webb, for asking us to share our organization with others. We look forward to March, as there are so many things going on and so many ways to show why we are “Wild About Rainbow!” First, there is the initiation at Maumee, in District #1, at which we are always happy to help. Next, our meeting in Genoa will find us watching our PWA and Grand Officer, Sophia C., perform as Horton in “Seussical the Musical,” the Genoa High School musical. Of course, no March would be complete without helping out at the Zenobia Shrine Circus – cotton candy, snow cones – so come out and see us and enjoy an amazing evening of GREAT family entertainment. This is always a great time working together and getting to know our Rainbow sisters from District #1 and so many of our Shrine family. Our Grand officers will take a break from the circus to travel to Columbus and the NW Temple to celebrate with our Grand Worthy Advisor and fellow Grand Officers at the Grand Reception of Districts 6 and 8. Our second meeting in March will find us in Perrysburg Temple, where we will be celebrating with Kyra as she gets ready to perform in Rossford’s High School musical, “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” Finally, on the last Saturday of the month, some of the girls and advisors will travel to Grove City to take part in the Tri-Youth Leadership Day. What a great chance to meet with members from all three youth groups to explore ideas, to better ourselves and our organizations. So many activities, so many great ways of spreading ‘Love for Rainbow,’ while helping us all grow! If you know of a young lady who would love to be involved in such a great organization, PLEASE let us know. There is ALWAYS room for more friends to join in the fun and fellowship. From left to right: WB Doug Habegger, PGIM; Leslie Habegger; Stacie Sime and RWB Jeff Sime, JGD. It was made very clear that this was to be a private photo, so the face in back remains unnamed. He does seem to gravitate toward the limelight though. Pictured at right, RWB Jeffrey Sime, the Junior Grand Deacon is getting the hang of being a Grand Lodge Officer. He apparently is doing a great job of gobbling up all the wonderful homemade pies on the traveling circuit, but he may still need to learn to pace himself a bit. As is made evident by this unfortunate photo, he is starting to encounter some wardrobe issues. At only the second Grand Master’s Reception, he already outgrew and busted his belt! Grand Lodge Officers may SAY they’re busy, but obviously not too busy to do some sightseeing while they’re out and about. Pictured above are Junior Grand Deacon Jeff Sime and Grand Master Steve Grindle who took time to visit the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant, West Virginia as a part of their “official” Grand Lodge duties.
