Once again, we return with Footsteps To My Homeland #MalaysianFoodFest!
Today we would like to introduce to you this dish....
We bring you today the one and only:
Roti Canai!
Roti Canai is a type of Indian-influenced flatbread that can be found in various "mamak" stores in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
Like I have said in my previous #MalaysianFoodFest post, it may be more expensive depending on your location but it's more commonly found in places like Malaysia.
Roti Canai is served with Dhal, a type of curry with mild spiciness depending on your level of spicy tolerance, along with mutton and chicken curry.
Some Chinese refer to the Roti Canai as a 'flying bread', because while Roti Canai is made, it is flipped and tossed in the air, as if it is flying :O
Maybe perhaps you don't like the bland taste of Roti Canai, wel don't worry! There are many varaitions of Roti ___ ! Here are some of them:-
1) Roti Telur- Same with Roti Canai but Telur is Malay for Egg. Hence, this Roti Canai is made with egg.
2) Roti Tisu- Tisu is Malay for Tissue, and Roti Tisu is paper-thin and very flaky, just like Tissue Paper! Except, it's not flaky.
3) Roti Bom- Bom is Malay for Bomb. It;s a smaller but thicker roti, with the dough wound in a spiral. It is often served sweet, with sugar and with margarine sometimes.
4) Roti Planta- This variation of roti is served stuffed with margarine (often the Planta Margarine that is found in Malaysia). Malaysians are very creative people!
5) Roti Sardin- Sardin is Malay for Sardine. It is served stuffed with canned cardine and sometimes (this might sound unappetizing!) also with ketchup, or sambal (A Malaysian type of curry that is also served in Nasi Lemak)
Below, I have uploaded pictures of different variations of Roti Canai! Try and guess which is which hehe :)
*It's hard to identify for non-Malaysians, because they all nearly look the same!
Fun Fact: "Mamaks" as what Malaysians refer to as restaurants that serve Roti Canai, etc...are opened 24 Hours! Mamaks to us Malaysians are like Mcdonalds here! :D
