Codename Eagle - Single Player Demo
A first-person shooter that blends historical accuracy with alternate realities and some stealth mechanics #Codename Eagle #First-person shooter #Alternate reality #Codename #Eagle #FPS
The first World War changed the layout of the entire European continent and it certainly brought a lot of death and destruction to both sides, regardless of who came out on top. On the other hand, it got surpassed by the second one, which is saying something, considering the fact that millions of people died in either one of them and a huge amount of money went into the weapons used by the armies.
Codename Eagle is a first-person shooter that tells a different story, one in which the first World War never happened and the Germans just managed to remain calm up until 1917. However, in a whole different part of the continent, a new conflict was brewing and it certainly didn't look any better. Hence, the Russian tsar gets assassinated by his own son an everything takes a rather weird turn in Russia, for a while.
The role you play is that of an agent for the Shadow Command, which is a secret organization created by a few other European states in order to gather intelligence on those who are itching to create trouble. The plot begins a few years after the aforementioned assassination and it follows your incursion into the corrupt and evil Russian empire, where you have to destroy a variety of objectives and eliminate dangerous people who cannot be allowed to carry on their plans.
What makes the game a bit different is the slight orientation toward stealth, rather than encouraging you to go straight for the head-on encounter each time. However, it is definitely not a major part of the gameplay and you can certainly play it any style you want, because the AI is not really worth the trouble of sneaking around. Another interesting thing is that you can move faster and make a run for it using a variety of vehicles that can be found throughout the levels.
When it comes to graphics, on the other hand, things are a bit shaky, even if the game was released a long time ago. Looking at other titles that were available around that date, it must be mentioned that technology allowed for much better-looking engines, which makes the blocky environments spread throughout this game that much more shameful.
In the end, although Codename Eagle is definitely not a jewel of the genre and a lot of things were just designed on the run, you can still have a bit of fun with it and spray a few bullets left and right. The story is ridiculous enough to be worth a playthrough.
