Background
A Manticore is a gigantic lion which may either have the head of a man or the head of a lion, the body of a lion, a scorpion's tail and it may have wings. The Manticore originated in Greece, and are as rare as the fabled Chimaera. Its poison contained in its stinger causes instant death, and it is rumored to sing to its prey as it succumbs to the effects.
In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Hagrid somehow manages to get Manticores to breed with Fire Crabs, creating the dangerous Blast-Ended Skrewts.
History
When Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger start researching for Rubeus Hagrid's Hippogriff case in the Prisoner of Azkaban they find a case in a book saying that a Manticore got off from it's charge for mauling a person but then she reads on and finds out that the jury were too scared to go near the Manticore.
