Today would have been Lee Marvin's (1924-1987) 94th birthday. He usually played tough guys or drunks, or drunk tough guys! He won a Best Actor Oscar in 1966 for Cat Ballou. He had that stare that made him a great screen bad guy.Was Spielberg's first choice for the role of Quint in Jaws, but Marvin told him he'd rather just go fishing. He also turned down First Blood, Sorcerer, The French Connection, Salvador, Dirty Harry, Death Wish, Deliverance, Where Eagles Dare, Patton, The War of the Worlds and For A Few Dollars More, which he turned down to do Cat Ballou. Mostly known for his action movies, he was a beloved actor who sadly passed away still too young at 63 from a heart attack. The man who owned the theater in my hometown as a kid looked just like Lee Marvin. Wish I had a photo of him now. These are the Lee Marvin movies I've seen so far: The Wild One Bad Day At Black Rock The Comancheros The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Cat Ballou The Dirty Dozen Point Blank Paint Your Wagon Death Hunt Gorky Park The Delta Force

A favorite, definitely. Lee Marvin was one of those tough-guy actors who came from well-to-do backgrounds. He was in two of my favorite Twilight Zone episode: Steel and The Grave. He'd have been great in Jaws and Dirty Harry. It's been a while since I saw Prime Cut but it's probably worth a look.

Here he is as MEATBALL in The Caine Mutiny. Probably the first film I ever noticed him in. One of his funny nice-guy roles. If wishes could be granted, Lee would still be with us and he would have continued to make us laugh and/or cringe (sometimes in the same role!)
Nice thread, Lebowskidoo π¦ thanks !

Claude Akins and Lee worked together in The Caine Mutiny as sailors Horrible and Meatball. I have read that Lee did not always have that deep forceful voice that he is rather famous for. Claude taught him some vocal and breathing tricks and voila ....
Thas' what I read ... maybe true, maybe not but rather cool if it is, eh ? Lebowskidoo π¦
