Wow, what a year and rollercoaster of emotions, 2020 has been. I will mention the terrible ‘C’ word, once and only once… ‘Covid’… and the devastating havoc that it has caused globally, with there being no corner of the earth that has not been adversely affected. Governments have been forced to print money, businesses brought to their knees and global health organisations have just rung the sombre bell of worldwide deaths being in excess of 1.5 million – with the United States, Brazil, and India the worst-hit countries, with the UK not far behind being the worst-hit in Europe, (per capita). Where it came from, no one truly knows, and conspiracy theories will run rampant for many years – but park its origin – fortunately, the end, at last, seems to be in sight by way of an authorised mass-scale vaccine. Experts conservatively say that producing a vaccine normally takes 10 years, yet this gamechanging vaccine has been engineered in just 10 months – and the equally good news is that it is our great UK scientists that have led the charge in this pioneering science. Hopefully, this momentum will continue and governments will pool resources to see off some of the world’s other diseases and cancers; a mind-numbing 1 to 3 million people die every year due to malaria alone! So, as a new decade dawns, 2021 is going to be a great year. Although the pandemic has undoubtedly afflicted the worst of the worst and unleashed untold hardship to billions of people, it has also taught us how fragile a place the world really is, and with that, what really matters in life – and how our important friends and family are. Raise a glass this Christmas, celebrate the New Year in style and always, play safe.

On Thursday 19 November, Brava Polo Team faced Sol de Agosto in The Pilar Cup Final at the Alfredo Lalor de Pilar headquarters. Sol de Agosto led from the outset and at the end of the fourth chukka the scores rested 6-3 in their favour. However, Brava Polo Team had an exceptional fifth chukka and fought back with four goals of their own (one from each of their players), while managing to keep Sol de Agosto from adding to their goal tally. The sixth and final chukka saw Sol de Agosto secure two consecutive goals, but a goal from Poroto Cambiaso defined the final score, 10-8. The result also meant that Brazilian Pedrinho Zacharías achieved his second Pilar Cup title, following his 2019 win with El Trébol Km. 90. Hurlingham Polo’s New Models Hurlingham Polo has launched a slightly off the wall campaign for Winter 2020, using equine models pictured in the brand’s apparel, with each portrait hand painted. These aren’t just any polo ponies, each model has been specially selected from the stables of Hurlingham Polo’s brand ambassadors. Little Mary has been added to the Polo Hall of Fame

The Museum of Polo & Hall of Fame has announced their 2021 Polo Hall of Fame inductees; Julio Arellano and John F “Jack”

Ivory, will be the newest members of the Polo Hall of Fame, The Iglehart Inductees for outstanding contributions to the sport are Dr. Paul Wollenman, joined by the posthumous inductee Bert Beveridge. The Horses to Remember inductees are Silverada and Little Mary. The inductees are nominated by the public and selected by a committee of individuals from across polo. The formal Induction Ceremony and Gala will take place in February 2022 in a joint celebration with the 2022 inductees – The Museum Board decided with the current environment that it would be prudent to wait until the pandemic situation clears, so a gala event can be planned where the inductees’ families, friends and fans could all attend.

The FEI has banned the removal of sensory hairs

The 2021 BMW NZ Polo Open will be played on Sunday 21 February

2021 will see the BMW NZ Polo Open celebrate their 44th anniversary, cementing the event in New Zealand’s polo calendar. The 2021 event will be held at Auckland Polo Club, Clevedon on Sunday 21 February and despite the current border restrictions, Event Director Lucy Ainsley has high hopes for next year’s event, “The teams for 2021 will be predominantly Kiwi polo players and with more teams entered, the competition will be tough which will make it great for spectators,” says Ainsley. “We are proud to have BMW as our official partner and fantastic returning sponsors with some exciting new ones on board too, we are doing everything our end to make it an exceptional day out, one that after all the lockdowns we all need!”.

During the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) General Assembly on Monday 23 November, a new rule was passed as part of veterinary regulations covering sport horses competing internationally under FEI rules in all disciplines. The FEI does not govern or provide rules for horse racing or polo, but polo has a signed Memorandum of Understanding with the Federation of International Polo (FIP). From July 2021, any horses who have had their sensory hairs removed (unless for veterinary reasons) will be disqualified. The reasoning from the FEI veterinary committee for the change is that they believe a horse’s sensory hairs must not be trimmed or removed as it “reduces the horse’s sensory ability”. “The change will align with legislation in a number of national federations where trimming or removal of sensory hairs is forbidden and in some cases carries a heavy sanction”.

English Winter Polo Resumes

The arena season has now been resumed

Following the meeting of the Winter Polo Steering Group held on Wednesday 25 November, it was agreed that polo, lessons and coaching could resume from Wednesday 2 December, subject to the HPA Winter Polo Procedures (to view these please visit the HPA website). Each club will be visited by an HPA appointed official who will be able to assist the club with any questions they may have, and clubs are encouraged to contact their local council’s Environmental Health Officer to request an inspection Clubs that wish to allow spectators should apply to the HPA for the appropriate level. The application must confirm that a risk assessment has been carried out and specify the maximum number of spectators they would like to allow. The number of spectators is

limited to clubs in Tiers 1 and 2, and to 50% of a club’s capacity. All those attending will be subject to social contact rules. Any Winter Polo that will be played in England will now be subject to Covid-19 Rule Changes, the below will be used until further notice: 1. Start of game – The game will start with an indirect hit in from the 25-yard line 2. Ball goes over boards – If the ball goes over the boards the umpire will award a free hit against the player who last hit it 3. Penalty 1 – A goal will be awarded followed by a defended 25 hit, for 1 point. 4. Changing horses – During a chukka there will be only one change allowed which the umpire will call when the ball is in a neutral area after half a chukka or a break in play. For any change, during or between chukkas, teams must maintain social distancing with each team changing in a designated part of the arena. 5. Throw-in – If a throw-in is required then one player from each team will line up. All other players must be 10 yards back on their own side and may not touch the ball until it has been hit by one of the two players in the throw-in. 6. Extra Chukka – If an extra chukka is required it will begin with a throw-in as detailed above. The umpire will throw the ball in from the centre towards the boards with his right shoulder facing the point from where the “restart” would have been. HPA Announce Covid Crisis Aid The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) has announced that following a Stewards meeting on Tuesday 10 November, it has been decided that the HPA is in a position to offer help to members of the wider polo community who are experiencing hardship due to Covid-19 implications, with a particular focus on pony welfare: The HPA is financially in a better position than we might had anticipated through a combination of early action to cut costs, the benefit of the government support scheme and income from playing more polo during the season than we had expected. Additionally we have adequate reserves and the Polo Charity may also be in a position to make grants where appropriate. Any club or member who is aware of someone in our community experiencing particular hardship as a result of COVID at this time is

requested to put forward an outline of any deserving case for us to give consideration. We are thinking not just about clubs but anybody dependent on polo for their living and certainly any cases of potential pony welfare problems. Obviously how much we are able to help depends on how many cases are put forward and a panel will be put together to make the decision on who we can help. The more information you can give us the better. The Trustees of the Polo Charity meet on 24th November so it is important that we have any proposals before that meeting. At the time of going to print, despite a short delay due to wet weather, The 127th HSBC Argentine Open was underway. With 10 teams split into two zones, Zone A will see La Dolfina Saudi line-up complete once again after being plagued by injuries earlier in the season and seeking their eighth consecutive title, while Zone B will feature Ellerstina, recent winners of both the 80th Tortugas Open and the 127th RUS Hurlingham Open and therefore the only team eligible for the Argentine Triple Crown title this year. The team lists see five players make their Argentine Open debuts, with Martín Podestá, Santiago Loza, Tomás Fernández Llorente, Pedro Falabella and Segundo Bocchino all competing in the illustrious tournament for the first time.

Global Polo TV Filming Guidelines Due to the increased interest in video on-demand and livestreamed games, the USPA Communications Department and Global Polo Entertainment (GPE)/Global Polo TV (GPTV) has presented guidelines that will allow USPA Member Clubs to submit an application to film USPA Tournaments that can be uploaded to Global Polo TV for “OnDemand” viewing.

Hans Albrecht Freiherr von Maltzahn, Honorary President of the German Polo Association (DPV) and Ambassador of the Federation of International Polo (FIP), passed away on Monday 12 October aged 85-years-old. “Polo has lost a great sportsman, a role model and a friend. The board of the German Polo Association and all members, his companions and friends whom he inspired, encouraged and supported bid farewell to a true gentleman and an outstanding sportsman.” commented Bernhard Willroth, DPV.

Obituary Randle Brooks 10 April 1941 – 11 November 2020 Cheshire Polo Club remembers Randle Brooks, their longest playing member, “We are saddened to say that our longest serving playing member Randle Brooks has died peacefully at his home. He is mourned by his family and friends and the Peover and Tatton Estates. Randle has been playing polo in Cheshire since 1962 under the burgundy colours of Peover, named after the family home near Knutsford. Peover played the tournament circuit in the 60s, 70s and 80s from Edinburgh and Toulston to Guards, Cirencester and Cowdray. At its peak, the team got to the final of the high-goal Warwickshire Cup and they also won The Royal Windsor Cup when Red Armour from the USA was playing for them. His team mates also included over the years V.P. Singh and Alberto Goatie. Randle supported countless local people and organisations over the years and had a keen interest in conservation and history. He will be very much missed not only by his wife Juliet, son Henry and family to whom we send our condolences but also by all the members of Cheshire Polo Club as he was held in very high regard as he was a huge part of our Club.”

Cirencester Park Polo Club (CPPC) announced that on Monday 16 November, Mick Ponting passed away peacefully in the evening. Mick’s passion had always been horses. He had a successful career as a vet and later on, as a lecturer at the Royal Agricultural University. He was also very involved with pony welfare at CPPC and in Brunei. Mick also developed a company promoting pro-biotics for the equestrian industry, which was hugely successful. Mick was an extremely caring, kind, thoughtful person as well as being a very respected vet, who enjoyed every aspect of polo and was always very generous in helping and encouraging people into the sport. His passion was such that he donated a trophy to CPPC, used for a 4 goal tournament – The Ponting Pot. Mick will be sorely missed by all at CPPC, and we extend our deepest condolences to his wife Maureen, his son Mikey, and all of his family.

Eleventh Hurlingham Win for Ellerstina The undefeatable Pieres/Ulloa combination continues

ollowing on from their Tortugas Open win less than two weeks earlier, Ellerstina found themselves in their second Argentine Triple Crown Final of the season, putting them under pressure to maintain their undefeated record and with it their chance of capturing the 2020 Triple Crown, an accolade the team has not held since 2010. Both Ellerstina and RS Murus Sanctus had met previously in the Semi Finals of The Tortugas Open, which saw Ellerstina secure a narrow 15-13 win with a nail-biting display of high goal polo; therefore everyone was expecting another close match. Despite their line-up featuring Alfredo Cappella Barabucci and Francisco Elizalde who had not played in a Triple Crown Final before, RS Murus Sanctus did not let the pressure affect their performance and got off to a promising start, scoring within the opening seconds. However, Ellerstina fought back and built upon solid teamwork to hold back RS Murus

Sanctus, who struggled to elude Ellerstina and by half-time the scores rested 10-6 in favour of Ellerstina. In the fifth and sixth, Ellerstina outscored RS Murus Sanctus five goals to one, Facundo Pieres scored 10 goals overall in the Final, but in the seventh chukka RS Murus Sanctus fought back with three unanswered goals to bring them within striking distance of Ellerstina. However, RS Murus Sanctusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hopes were short lived as Ellerstina seized control of the last chukka, with impressive goals by both Ulloa and Facundo Pieres securing Ellerstina a 16-11 win and with it the 127th Hurlingham Open title. For Ellerstina this was the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eleventh Hurlingham Open win, with previous success in 1994, 1995, 1999, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2016, 2017 and 2018; while for Hilario Ulloa it was his first Hurlingham title.

Meanwhile, defending champions Ellerstina were confident and strong, with Hilario Ulloa slotting in perfectly alongside the Pieres trio, dominating the play from the outset and by

half-time enjoyed a 10-4 lead, with Facundo Pieres responsible for seven of his team’s goals in the first four chukka. After half-time, Ellerstina continued their offensive and maintained their advantage, with both impressive attack and defence. By the last chukka, Ellerstina led 16-5, a last-minute penalty conversion from Laprida saw another goal notched up for La Dolfina Saudi, but it still left a huge gap in the scores with a final score of 16-6. The win meant Ellerstina achieved their twelfth Tortugas Open title, with Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres enjoying their ninth title, with the brothers’ only two Tortugas titles behind the historic top winners of the tournament Pablo Mac Donough and Alberto P. Heguy with 11 wins apiece.

The polo action began with Scottsdale Maserati’s Arizona Polo Club victorious over Mark Taylor Residential’s Denver Polo Club 6 to 5. Diego Florez, who scored four of the Arizona team’s goals commented, “As always the 2020 Stella

Artois Polo Classic was very well put together to allow for social distancing, but still enabled great entertainment for spectators who love polo, horses, canines, fashion, and much more”. The second match of the day was between the two higher handicapped teams, EPR Polo and USA Celebrity Cruises, with the match donating $10,000 to the charities Arizona Equine Rescue and Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center. With two professionals (John Gobin and Marcos Bignoli) as well as a three goal handicap advantage, it was little surprise to see EPR Polo taking home The Molina Cup with a 6-4 win. The USA Celebrity Cruises Team Captain, Tareq Salahi commented, “The Polo Classic offered something for everyone and is an outstanding event. We look forward to defending our title next year”. The third and final match of the day saw alumni representing Safeway Albertson’s Work to Ride take on Sanderson Lincoln’s Women’s All-Stars, with an 8-4 victory for Work to Ride. performances by the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, a preview of Barrett-Jackson’s 2021 Collector Car Auction and luxury car displays. If that wasn’t enough then the chance to rub shoulders with celebrities as part of the charity “Million Dollar Mingle”, plus a drive-in concert by rock legend Roger Clyne, there really was something for everyone! Currently it is planned that the event will return as The Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships in November 2021.

In The International Cup, Argentina faced USA in the finale to Grand Champions Polo Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fall season. The teams met at Santa Rita Polo Farm and with eight 24

consecutive wins under their belts, the pundits were favouring Team USA. The first chukka saw Argentina facing a strong US defence and the first goal of the day was scored by Nic Roldan, who was later named Most Valuable Player. With goals from Jeff Hall and Grant Ganzi in the second chukka, Team USA maintained their momentum, although Argentina also managed to make their way onto the scoreboard and the chukka ended 3-1.

Horacio Heguy added another goal to the Argentine tally in the third chukka, but Ganzi quickly replied with another goal for USA to end the first half 4-2. Both teams scored early in the second half, but with each team replying to every goal with one of their own, Argentina struggled to make up ground and the final bell rang with the scores reading 7-4 in favour of Team USA who retained the trophy for the ninth year. www.polotimes.co.uk

AM Polo clinched The UAE National Day Cup by half a goal

An action-packed day saw the Final of the November AHPRC League at Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club (AHPRC) between AM Polo and Ankora/Bangash Polo. AM Polo’s Santos Iriate opened the scoring with the first goal of the match and AM Polo continued to dominate as they maintained the lead throughout the match and they ultimately secured the win with a score of 8-6. Santos Iriate was named Most Valuable Player and Erenita Lenon, ridden by Frederico Potobsky, was chosen as the Best Playing Pony. This year’s UAE National Day Cup saw seven 8-10 goal teams competing. It’s been a busy month for Grand Champions Polo Club (GCPC) and on Wednesday 18 November Casablanca lifted The North American Cup after defeating Newport 14-9 in the Final, with Nic Roldan named Most Valuable Player and Tessita, played by Sugar Erskine, chosen as Best Playing Pony. On Sunday 29 November, Grand Champions met Aspen Valley in The Legends of Polo Carlos Gracida Memorial, which honours the late Carlos Gracida, www.polotimes.co.uk

Usually, the whole Gracida family attends the match, but while the pandemic has forced GCPC to close the club to spectators, Gracida’s sons, Carlitos and Nano, were still able to play in the four chukka tournament, which saw Aspen Valley take the title with a final score of 5-3; Nano Gracida was named Most Valuable Player, while Michael Bickford’s Lola was selected as Best Playing Pony.

Horsegate, winners of The Texas Open Final

The Texas Open Final is the last match of the Club’s autumn season, and this year saw Tonkawa face Horsegate. Horsegate stormed into the first chukka and took a three goal lead, Tonkawa put their name on the scoreboard in the second chukka and by half-time the score was 7-4 in favour of Horsegate. Tonkawa roared into the second half, with Nacho Badiola scoring his fourth goal of the day, but Horsegate’s Toto Collardin (who was later named Most Valuable Player for his efforts) maintained the offensive and with it Horsegate’s lead. Despite the best efforts of Tonkawa, Horsegate took home the 2020 Texas open title. Rihanna, played by Mason Wroe, was named Best Playing Pony.

On Sunday 1 November, Hit Air and Brookland Plantation went head-to-head in the 2020 Bronze Trophy Final at New Bridge Polo & Country Club, Aiken. Hit Air took the lead from the first chukka and managed to maintain the momentum throughout the match, with their hard work paying off and culminating in a 12-8 win. Southwestern Circuit Sportsmanship Cup winners, Quiet Creek Farm

On the weekend of 24 October, four teams competed in the Southwestern Circuit Sportsmanship Cup hosted by Central Texas Polo Association (CTPA) and ATX Polo Club at Two Wishes Polo Club, Texas. Polo InterActive and Quiet Creek Farm earned their places in Sunday’s Final, which saw Quiet Creek Farm take control from the outset and take home both the trophy and $2,500 prize money with a final score of 11-2½. Scoring seven of her team’s 11 total goals, Hannah Reynolds was named Most Valuable Player and Vegas, owned and played by Ariel Rodriguez, was named Best Playing Pony.

In the XII Memorial Wolfgang Reber Tournament the winning team was Scharlau P.T. (Santi Calzado, Álvaro Calzada, Jorge Ayesa and Robert Payne / Tonete Ayesa). The Fair Play Award went to Diego Pérez.

Tedworth Park Polo Club As a way to encourage military players to give winter polo a try, UK Armed Forces Polo Association (UKAFPA) will subsidise the introduction to Arena Polo sessions outlined below by Tedworth Park Polo Club (TPPC). TPPC are now taking bookings from Wednesday 2 December, with instructional chukkas re-commencing on Friday 4 December and club chukkas on Saturday 5 – Sunday 6 December. The introduction to Arena Polo sessions will take place on 9 and 16 December and Wednesday 6 January. These sessions will last two hours and will include arena rules and tactics, stick work and chukkas, and will cost £100 (military) including pony hire. They will be limited to six people per session. AFPA will contribute £40 to the £100 total at source thus the sessions will only cost APOLOA players £60. Army persons who wish to take part are to note that this is classed as ‘Coaching’ and thus permitted BUT in their own time as civilians, thus there will be NO requirement to register as an APOLOA Member. www.polotimes.co.uk

Cambridge University Polo Club Focus Cambridge University Polo Club (CUPC) is a long established university polo club, with a number of wins under their belts and while the 2020/21 season has been delayed due to lockdowns, their highlights from the 2020 SUPA Winter Nationals included CUPC’s Beginner 4 team placing third out of 12 and their Novice 4 team came third out of 16. CUPC’s 2019 fixture against Royal Holloway resulted in an 8-1 win for its beginner team, and another win for their novice team with a final score of 13-9. Although they didn’t manage to beat Oxford in the 2019 Varsity A match, their Varsity B team won against the Dark Blues.

Jenny Ward George When I first went to a trial lesson at CUPC, I was sceptical. It took my friend, Catherine Richards, three years to convince me to try it out. So, it came as a surprise to me that polo would be a sport that I would quickly fall in love with, so much so that I would end up joining the committee the same academic year! Polo itself is exhilarating, fun, competitive, and engaging, but one of the best parts of CUPC is the team you get to know and the camaraderie along the way. CUPC have been particularly supportive and welcoming, and together with the university and colleges, make polo fully accessible through subsidising lessons, transport and matches. Between a recommendation from the captain and a sports grant from my college, Peterhouse, I was able to compete at SUPA Winter Nationals, a major highlight of playing polo last year.

Ed Cartwright I joined CUPC and played polo for the first time last year and quickly became addicted! It’s a great environment to learn in and it didn’t take long to get used to a totally new style of riding, the lessons are a nice mix between stick and ball work and practice chukkas and provide a good opportunity to socialise too. I’ve since started playing closer to home at White Rose Polo Club and I’m eager to get back in the saddle with the university and hopefully play in the Nationals next term.

I grew up riding – eventing and show jumping – but only started polo in my final year. It was such a wonderful opportunity to learn a whole new riding style, and I enjoyed it so much I went on a polo holiday as soon as that first term of lessons was over. The opportunity to compete at SUPA Nationals was also a great introduction to actual game play and made me absolutely set on finding a club and continuing playing after graduation.

I found my first year playing pretty exciting throughout – initially from adjusting to the differences in riding polo ponies in jarringly close proximity to others, and then as I slowly learnt rules and tactics it came from the feeling of striking more than a few hits together, and then from having freer-flowing chukkas and the chance to string everything together competing with others, culminating in Winter Nationals!

My introduction to polo was the most unexpected delight and highlight of this past year. Joining a lesson in my first week at Cambridge, I was instantly captured by everything about the sport, with the wonderfully welcoming Club and coach creating a fun and supportive learning environment. As a beginner, joining CUCP was the perfect polo introduction, with our brilliant teammates constantly cheering us on and always willing to lend us some (often much needed!) advice. Whilst the season was unfortunately cut short, highlights – including the Beginners’ Winter Varsity and SUPA Winter Nationals – have only made me more excited to continue playing in the years to come.

On Saturday 28 November, Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club hosted their next generation of players in the Kids Polo National Day Challenge 2020. Having started off in the Club’s Riding School, the young players took to the field under the guidance of Tomas Palacios Bacque and Tomas Iriarte. With both sides playing well, in the end it was Team Foals who defeated Team Fillies 1-0.

SUPA Update With Coronavirus still impacting upon Youth Polo, Polo Times got in touch with Schools & Universities Polo Association (SUPA) Chairman, Charles Betz, to find out what the current outlook for SUPA is, “As relates to SUPA and SAPA activities I can only report that our suspension of all activities has continued and will be lifted when we review the guidance from the government, HPA and our Institutional Members whom we represent. The Trustees will be meeting this month to plan and forecast a return to tournament operations. For

the moment and given the tier system across the country we will need a robust mechanism to check players, officials and others for vaccine cards or some secure means to insure a COVID free environment. We will re-commence when the green light appears from our member institutions, probably in mid- 2021, earlier if we are lucky.”

For the second year in a row, Hesketh Polo Team took home the Ladies Challenge Cup at Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club. The event was held in association with Pink Caravan in order to help raise awareness about breast cancer. Four teams competed against each other in two matches; the first match saw Pink Soldiers take a 7½-5 win against the Pink Warriors while in the second match the scores were much closer with Hesketh Polo narrowly securing a 2½-2 win against AM Polo. On Sunday 15 November, Polo Gear Coffee Company faced Iconica in the 2020 Texas Women’s Open Final at Houston Polo Club. Iconica had the edge before the first throw in, with four-time U.S. Open Polo Championship winner Kristy Outhier coaching the team and also leading with a half goal handicap advantage. Iconica were the first to add their names to the scoreboard with great teamwork resulting in a score of 2½-1 in their favour at the end of

the first half. Hope Arellano continued the offensive for Iconica in the third chukka with another goal, with nothing in reply from Polo Gear Coffee Company. Teammate Maureen Brennan commented, “No matter what was happening on the field, we maintained a very man-based strategy; On offense Kylie [Sheehan] and Hope [Arellano] worked very well together in the back and I alternated between shielding for them and being very dedicated to staying with one of their backs”. The fourth chukka saw Iconica focus on maintaining their lead, which was threatened by a last-minute goal from Dawn Jones for Polo Gear Coffee Company, but it was not enough and Iconica took the title with a final score of 3½-2. Jones was named Most Valuable Player and her pony Picasita, played by Tiffany Busch in the second chukka received the Best Playing Professional award and Law Man’s Dancer was named both Best Playing Pony Amateur and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Best Playing Pony Bronze trophy.

This year, saw 12 teams enter the 2020 U.S. Open Women’s Handicap, and on Saturday 14 November it was Aspen Snowmass and Villa Ecleto who faced each other at Houston Polo Club in the Final. Aspen Snowmass quickly took the lead in the first chukka, despite Villa Ecleto’s half goal handicap advantage and by the end of the first chukka were in the lead 2-½. Despite four attempts on goal in the second chukka by Aspen Snowmass, none of them found the goal posts, but despite their inaccurate shooting Aspen Snowmass excelled in their defensive work and Villa Ecleto failed to score any field goals, with just one penalty conversion. After some half-time team talks, Villa Ecleto bounced back in the second half and took the

lead with two goals from Mia Bray giving her team a 3½-2 lead. However, their advantage was short lived as KC Kruger (later named Most Valuable Player) and Massey Colburn scored a goal apiece for Aspen Snowmass to take the title with a final score of 4-3½. Oh my goodness, what a bizarre year 2020 has been which, I think none of us will forget! Although it has been rather unsettling for many in the equestrian world with stop start competitions and polo – it’s hard for us humans to comprehend, let alone our equine friends! As the summer proceeded and polo eventually got underway, it was very busy, with a lot of polo being played in quick succession, and I was delighted to see how well horses were looking, and also coping with the amount of polo being played. It seemed such a shame to turn them out again when looking so good. Huge well done to all those amazing grooms out there making it happen and coping with the ‘stop, start and full on’ summer we had. And, now here we are, wet miserable days and winter is finally settling in, as I write, we are in Lockdown 2.0 and I am working from home again; sitting in the warm thinking 36

of the polo ponies turned away on ‘holiday’ and battling the elements. Always keeping a beady eye on some social media to see what is happening I have spotted … • GOW Equine wintering their polo ponies with hard feed already – what a great way to prepare them for the winter months, maintaining nutrients in their diets to help with immunity, consistent hoof growth, and to help maintain some body condition. • The use of field/paddock licks for wintering polo ponies on several Instagram accounts – this, again, is great to see. If option one of giving individual feeds of concentrates is not possible then absolutely this is the next best thing. As you can imagine, I am delighted

to see polo ponies receiving some extra nutrients that may not be abundant in the grass or hay/haylage over the winter months. I sat down at the end of the season with Helen Eustace at Whitecrane, to discuss plans for winter feeding for playing ponies on holiday, broodmares and youngstock; the emphasis here being prepared for the winter months with a plan ready for when the weather changes. It’s preferable to try and prevent weight loss as it can take a long time and a lot of feed to get the condition back on again.

Early winter

Begin with field/paddock licks, but bear in mind they will not give the calories that some individuals may need. Be aware of how much time each individual spends at the lick each day, or if there are any of the ‘big personalities’ pushing away the quieter members of the herd – if so they won’t be getting those key nutrients whilst others are benefitting. When individuals begin to drop off condition, they will need a separate feed to provide calories, protein, vitamins and www.polotimes.co.uk

minerals, which will need to come from a concentrate ration rather than a field lick.

Avoiding weight loss Older Ponies

These can drop weight quickly as the weather changes as their digestive tract is probably not as efficient as it once was, possibly due to poorer dentition or gut flora that is not working as effectively. Once the grass has stopped growing and it is supplemented with hay/haylage it may not be enough to provide the calories they now require. Sometimes their droppings will become very loose and they may become very tucked up and hollow in the flanks, possibly due to the lack of digestible fibre now in their diet. Opt for Conditioning Cubes rather than a mix as they can be softened with some warm water or beet pulp, consider adding a pre/probiotic, and think of using a soft meadow hay if the hay/haylage is very stalky and lignified.

First UK Winter

This must be a struggle! Providing some extra TLC during their first winter will only reap benefits for their next full playing season. Whilst adjusting to the weather, grass and hay/haylage they can sometimes really struggle to maintain their condition. Ensuring they look well before being turned away, coupled with feeding concentrates throughout the whole winter to provide calories and a balance of vitamins and minerals would be of huge benefit. Whatever the reason for some not holding their condition well over the winter,

we can generally assume the hind gut is not working as an efficient ‘fermentation vat’ and their natural ‘central heating system’ will not be generating warmth from fibre digestion. Calorie intake from the forage may not be adequate for their needs and consequently weight loss is inevitable. Providing extra calories through a concentrate feed will be of huge benefit for them to come out of the winter holding some condition, enabling them to bounce back into work in the spring. Remember ‘yoyo’ dieting is not recommended for anyone – especially our equine athletes! Roll on 2021, let’s hope polo gets back to normal! Stay safe, stay well. These are often a predisposing factor to weight loss during the winter or summer, but when they have access to grass, hay or haylage 24/7 this does favour their physical and psychological needs. Usually, when the quality and quantity of grass begins to drop they will begin to lose condition, so supplementing with a soft digestible forage is essential and subsequently feeding some concentrates to maintain condition is ideal. Feeding as individuals is preferable – they would ideally need a low starch cube or mix eg. Baileys Ease & Excel. Cubes, I think, are easier to feed in fields as there is not so much waste and they can ‘hoover’ them up a bit more effectively! Gut Punch The silent killer

A direct blow to the stomach area can happen fast – mostly without any harm. But with rising blunt forces to these soft and elastic intestinal structures the danger of bleeding increases dramatically. Since the 1970s the aggressive operative approach to all forms of abdominal trauma was the golden standard until the establishment of formal trauma centres. Due to the fact that the spleen is a solid organ it is the most often injured organ in blunt trauma. In former times the Splenectomy was the only satisfactory treatment for this injury. Participation in sports that involve the potential for contact or collision needs to be carefully assessed in high velocity accidents.

First responders or in the absence of professional caretakers a teammate can palpate the abdomen. Symptoms of a lacerated or ruptured spleen include pain or tenderness to the touch in the upper left part of the abdomen,

left shoulder and left chest wall, as well as confusion and light-headedness. If any of the symptoms are observed after a trauma, immediate emergency medical attention is life saving. Under clinical settings emergency sonography or abdominal CT (computer tomography with or without contrast fluid) examination can precisely differentiate between potential sub-capsular injuries as hematomas from life threatening mass bleeding.

Treatment options

Treatment options depend on the condition of the injury. Mostly, a conservative nonoperative treatment regime is recommended.

The spleen is the largest organ in the lymphatic system. It is an important organ for keeping bodily fluids balanced, but it is possible to live without it. The spleen is located under the ribcage and above the stomach in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen. A spleen is soft and generally looks purple. It is made up of two different types of tissue. The red pulp tissue filters the blood and gets rid of old or damaged red blood cells. The white pulp tissue consists of immune cells and helps the immune system fight infection. Spleen lacerations or ruptures usually occur from a blunt blow to the abdominal region. These blows can break in the spleen’s surface and can lead to severe internal bleeding and signs of shock (fast heart rate, dizziness, pale skin, fatigue). Without emergency care, the internal bleeding could become life-threatening. On the continuum of spleen breakage, a laceration refers to a lower-grade extent of injury, where just a part of the spleen is damaged. A ruptured spleen is the highest grade of broken spleen injury.

The tricky lower-grade lacerations may be able to heal without surgery, though they will probably require hospital stays to observe constantly the clinical condition. Highergrade lacerations or ruptures may require instant surgery to repair the spleen, surgery to remove part of the spleen, or surgery to remove the spleen completely. If only part of the spleen is removed, the procedure is called a partial splenectomy. Unlike some other organs, like the liver, the spleen does not grow back (regenerate) after it is removed. Up to 30% of people have a second spleen (called an accessory spleen). These are usually very small, but may grow and function when the main spleen is removed. Rarely, a piece of the spleen may break off with trauma. If the spleen is removed, this piece can grow and function

Complications

Life without a functional spleen or after removal is possible and may not be recognised by the player. Due to its crucial role in the body’s ability to fight off bacteria, living without the spleen makes the human body more likely to develop infections, especially dangerous ones such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Haemophilus influenzae. These bacteria cause severe pneumonia, meningitis, and other serious infections. Vaccinations to cover these bacteria should ideally be given to patients about two weeks

before planned surgery or roughly two weeks after emergency surgery. Other new immunizations may be recommended as well.

Prevention

When deceleration happens after hitting the ground, only falling techniques can help to transfer the energy with a rolling fall moment. Relevant protection is possible by airbag vest or cushioned safety vest when direct blunt impact to the abdomen happens.

Recovery

After open Splenectomy, a hospital stay of about one week is the average. Those who have a laparoscopic Splenectomy are usually sent home sooner. It will take about four to six weeks to recover from the procedure. Your specialised health care team will tell you when you are ready to start sports, especially riding. Individual return to sport plans are recommended.

Slider Lateral Lunges (Inner thigh strength) 1. Grab a slider or folded towel and find a slippery surface 2. Start with feet close together and one foot planted on the slider/towel 3. Gently slide this foot away from you (keeping the leg fully extended) and drop down into a lateral lunge 4. Stay strong and stable through the planted leg (you should feel your glutes working to hold you in this position). 5. Gently slide the foot back towards the other leg finishing in standing position 6. You should feel your inner thighs activate as you pull your leg back to the start position.

Playing tips with Rege Ludwig Changing Direction Via A Lateral Manoeuvre

Renowned polo coach, Rege Ludwig gives his expert advice on how to get more out of your game

When it is realized that the polo horse moves laterally more frequently than it does either stop or turn, then learning to help your polo horse move laterally more efficiently and effectively should be easy to justify. The polo horse is more frequently thought of relative to stopping and turning than it is to moving laterally. Therefore, I think it safe to assume that a smaller percentage of players is aware of how often their horse is moving laterally. Relative to frequency of lateral movement, consider that when following a play down field, the majority of adjustments made to follow that play are lateral adjustments. Likewise, just about every time you ride your horse to a ball to hit it, you are typically adjusting your horse laterally to correctly position it to the ball. Every time you are involved in a ride off, you almost have to adjust your horse laterally to effectively execute the ride off. When positioning to control an opponent in a throw-in, that manoeuvre is typically initiated by a lateral move toward the opposing player. Additionally, within the throw-in, as you are moving in the direction of the goal at which your team is trying to score; you are initially moving laterally. Changing direction by way of a lateral move necessitates a different way of positioning your horse than does changing direction by way of turning. The major difference in the positioning of your horse’s body comes in the form of the positioning of its nose. When turning, your horse’s nose should turn in the direction of the turn. Contrastingly, to execute the lateral move, your horse’s nose should be turned slightly away from the direction of the lateral move. That movement of your horse’s nose allows its shoulder, on the side in the direction of the lateral move, to move more easily forward and out in the direction of the lateral move. Contrastingly, your horse’s nose turned in the direction of the lateral move restricts that shoulder movement. When changing direction by way of turning, your horse’s nose should turn in the

direction of the turn, which allows the outside shoulder to reach slightly further forward than the inside shoulder, as it must. Of the four manoeuvres a polo horse must execute in a game i.e., collect, accelerate, decelerate, and change direction; changing direction is the more complex, complicated and difficult manoeuvre to accomplish accurately. That brings me to the importance of collecting or supporting your polo horse to help it execute a change in direction via a lateral manoeuvre. To that end, there are three critical aspects of riding that facilitate helping your horse collect or support itself throughout the lateral manoeuvre. 1. Use your lower legs back on your horse’s sides to energize its hind end to drive its hind legs forward and under its body. 2. Apply a supportive pressure to your horse’s mouth to help it hold itself together consistent with the degree of intensity of the lateral move. 3. Squeeze your upper legs into your horse’s shoulders throughout the lateral manoeuvre process to help support you on the horse and your horse under you. A strong and secure seat is where many players experience problems in helping their horse balance itself and hold itself together throughout the lateral manoeuvre process. To realize having developed a strong and secure seat from which to help support you on your horse, and your horse under you, the place to start is by running through the Checklist for Polo Riding, i.e. - Turn your toes up and push your heels down to increase the gripping strength of your upper legs. - Turn your heels slightly out and away from your horse’s sides, causing the majority of weight in the stirrups to be placed on the medal, or inner, side of each foot (big ball). - The majority of the gripping pressure of your legs should be on the medial, or inner, side of your legs (3 o’clock left leg, and 9 o’clock right leg). - Your upper body should be vertical to leaning ever so slightly back so as to

balance your horse toward its hind end. As you are leaning your upper body back, allow your rein hand to move back correspondingly to support your horse’s front end with a pressure that is consistent with the degree of support needed to accomplish the lateral move. Once your seat is secure, and you are sufficiently supporting your horse’s front end; turn your horse’s nose ever so slightly away from the direction of the lateral move. Correspondingly, activate your outside lower leg with a squeeze, a tap, or a kicking motion to help collect your horse and indicate – move away from this leg. Your inside lower leg back should be maintained back, however, relatively inactive. After having collected your horse, maintain each lower leg proportionately back to energize your horse’s hind end and keep its back legs forward and under its body throughout the remainder of the lateral manoeuvre process. The critical issues of the lateral move process are: 1 – Keep your lower legs back to energize your horse’s hind to maintain its hind legs forward and under its body consistent with the degree of the intensity of the lateral move. 2 – Support your seat and your horse with an upper leg grip that is consistent with the degree of collection needed to execute the lateral move. 3 – Lean your upper body back to begin balancing your horse toward its hind end, and move your rein hand back to support your horse’s front end with a supportive pressure that is consistent with the degree of intensity of the lateral move. 4 – Turn your horse’s nose slightly away from the direction of the lateral move, 5 - Activate your outside lower leg with a squeeze or tapping motion to create a driving pressure on that side that is equal to the degree of intensity of the lateral move. 6 - Maintain your inside lower leg relatively back for the purpose of maintaining your horse’s hind end forward.

What is motivation?

Let us look at what motivation is: At first glance motivation might be a prematch pump-up speech where you come out the other side ready to die for your team. You can go onto YouTube these days and easily pull up an eight minute motivational speech resulting in you heading to the garage punch bag and sinking a glass of raw eggs. But realistically what is motivation? Motivation is the set of psychological forces that compel you to take action. Simple as that. I believe there are two driving factors to motivation: Number one: – The enjoyment of doing something For example: You are motivated to exercise or play polo because you enjoy it! Number two: – As put by Steven Pressfield in the book The War Of Art,“At some point, the pain of not doing it becomes greater than the pain of doing it.” For example: You’re motivated to do a job you hate because the worry of not having money is greater! If we understand what motivation is, then we can better understand how to be and feel more driven.

When playing, we want to feel energised, prepared, and excited so that we can be strong, have stamina, communicate well, anticipate the game, play with passion and be ready to react to whatever is thrown at us. How can we be motivated all the time?

The truth is you cannot always feel motivated, no matter how hard you try. Life and sport come with their natural ups and downs and it can be difficult to consistently maintain a high level of motivation. However, we can work to increase and sustain it. 46

Creating an environment for motivation:

Let us look at ways we can create a process that enables us to feel motivated: As we discussed the motivation for polo can be gained through the love of playing or the fear of not getting the outcome of playing. Therefore, we need to look at two things when maintaining and increasing motivation: 1) Enjoyment 2) The reasons why we play To be clear the aspects we are focusing on here are the ones we can control. The ones that are out of our control are out of our control, dealing with them are for another day. Getting fired from a team and racking up £30,000 of debt in vet bills is another reason for de-motivation but here we are assuming things are roughly on track. The elements we control are our physical and mental health and the various elements which affect these. During a season we need to think about our organisation, planning, nutrition, hydration, sleep, and rest. Not overdoing it or taking too much on and planning breaks away from polo to keep it fresh. We do not want to be overrun on game-days and therefore eliminating unnecessary work to keep the focus on the task in hand. Planning

blocks of time before games to rest and focus is essential. A good routine in the morning is also necessary to start the day well. A big part of the process is eliminating the things that sap our energy and adding those that give you energy. If we look at high performing professionals in other sports, it is no secret how important routine, organisation, nutrition, and training are to their end outcome. Now coming to the other side of motivation: the whys, results, aspirations, and end goals. We need to stay focused and have short term goals throughout the season. With all my clients I ask them to journal regularly to stay focused and intent on what they want to achieve. Alongside that we plan short-term weekly goals. Having a mentor or coach is a great way to keep you accountable during a busy season (this is also a plug, get in touch!). Tapping into the whys and staying connected to your goals inspires clarity and purpose, alongside not getting bogged down by the 12-1 hammering you just received, as well as a lame horse post-game. Here are some strategies to help you awaken your motivation 1) Write a mantra or sentence for yourself:

“He was relentless on the polo field no matter the result or situation” 2) Flow test – ask the question at random moments during the week (set random alarms) whether you’re in a “flow” (fully engaged)? If yes, why? if not, why not? 3) Question at the end of the day: “Was I better today than I was yesterday?” 4) Give yourself regular performance reviews – make sure every aspect of your work relates to your larger purpose. 5) Allow time to focus on projects/creations in your work rather than just the things you feel you must do. In summary, motivation does not come from a motivational video, quote, or single moment. It must be automatic and natural. The whole process needs to flow with enjoyment and purpose so that you can sustain motivation throughout a season or career. Tweaking your process and staying self-aware is key. At 18-years-old and 4 goals, Ned Hine already has a number of polo accomplishments under his belt, which include reaching the 2020 Cartier Queen’s Cup Semi Finals and the 2020 King Power Gold Cup Quarter Finals with Thai Polo, as well as winning The Archie David in 2017 with Shalimar and The Coworth Park Challenge at Guards Polo Club in 2018 What is your biggest passion and why? I love polo! My aim is to be a professional polo player and get to 10 goals. I have been playing polo since I was young, looking up to my dad [Andy Hine] who has helped me a lot. I also want to get a business degree at university so that I can make a living alongside playing polo.

Hardest opponent? Jeta & Barto Castagnola brothers! In the 2020 English high goal season I played them four times – three times we lost in overtime and the fourth time we also lost – they are very tough opponents.

Favourite hobby outside of polo? I love surfing and also spending time with friends in Australia, the UK and Argentina. Favourite celebrity and why? Margot Robbie (for obvious reasons!) and Kevin Hart – he is too funny.

What is your all time best polo memory? Professionally, it would have to be playing the English high goal season in 2020 with Thai Polo, but winning Pony Club Championship Surtees in 2015 with my siblings [Louis, Indi and Milly] was very memorable.

Best holiday destination & activity? Definitely Australia, at the family farm, outside of Melbourne, with my whole family. Which sports do you like outside of polo? I play a lot of golf, especially in the summer; I like tennis and I also enjoy playing football as I played a lot when I was younger and was in the first team at school.

Best pony and why? My grey mare, Happy Trap. She is an ex-Zacara mare and I have been playing her the last few years. She is so handy, powerful with great sides and acceleration, plus she is smooth and easy to hit the ball off.

Favourite film and why? I can’t choose between Step Brothers as I love Will Ferrell and I could watch it 100 times, and Fast & Furious as the action, characters and story plot are so great.

Who were/are your favourite teammates? My favourite teammates would have to be my siblings, Louis and Milly – I play a lot with Louis in Argentina. Also, Nico Roberts and although I haven’t played with him a huge amount, it is great fun playing with my dad.

Favourite food/dish? My mum’s homemade penne bolognaise.

Are you passionately superstitious? No, not at all.
