Beloved: Not Forgotten makes progress in 2021

%\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Since its founding in 2015, Beloved: Not Forgotten has continued to make progress on behalf of women victimized by sexual trauma. The last nine months have been particularly fruitful, according to Executive Director Dawnna Plummer, and she hopes to maintain this momentum in coming weeks and months, as Beloved works to attain its goal of purchasing a home with eight to 10 beds for women 18 and over who have escaped sexual exploitation through human trafficking. “A lot of good things happened in the last nine months,” Plummer exclaimed, “A lot of people from the community came through.” Most importantly, Beloved helped an individual escape a trafficking situation. For their safety, details are kept confidential; however, after being contacted through the internet, Beloved was able to find safe shelter in another state. After receiving a $25,000 grant from PB&J Foundation of Fort Wayne, Beloved purchased an apartment capable of housing two individuals in an emergency situation. Plummer noted such individuals often escape with little more than the clothes on their back and are often without identification, another way they are kept at the mercy of their captors. Through contacts gained during the last five years, Plummer can provide preliminary medical assistance and counseling. Beloved also works with organizations such as Indiana Trafficking Victims Assistance Program to obtain legal aid and National Shelter Alliance for more permanent housing. Of course, Plummer is looking forward to the day Beloved will provide such housing. In August, Beloved was able to reconvene SAAFE Circle (Sexual Abuse & Assault Forum for Empowerment), a support group for women 18 and over. “It’s difficult for survivors to find that courage to step out,” said Tina Arend,

Women wishing to take part can contact Arend at tina@ belovednotforgotten.com or Plummer at dawnna@belovednotforgotten.com. Donations have enabled Plummer to work full time for Beloved. A board of directors has also been formed, though Plummer noted more board members are needed. On Aug. 21, a “Fill the Car” event hosted by The Ruwm in Warsaw raised roughly $6,000, as well as an actual car, donated by Margarita Cervantes, which will be raffled off Sept. 26 during

Maya Stone is paving her future %\ -$60,1( 025(+($' 6WDII :ULWHU Unlike many seniors in high school, Maya Stone is quite the entrepreneur. While attending Warsaw Community High School she is the yearbook editor, a varsity swimmer, intern at The Papers Inc, has a part-time job at Panda Express and still finds time to run her own photography business. While Stone was born in Fort Wayne, she has spent the

last 10 years as a resident of Warsaw. In addition she comes from a photography driven family, with several members of her family pursuing that career. “My family is very much into photography. Two of my sisters are photographers and my stepdad is a photographer,” Stone said. Following in her family’s footsteps Stone started to take photography classes at Warsaw which in turn led to her developing her own business.

“I started a couple years ago taking just like fun pictures of my friends and then as I went through photography classes I started getting better. I went into taking senior pictures and it has just grown from there,” Stone said. She officially started her business in 2019. Stone takes family and senior portraits on the weekends when she has availability. In her free time she spends it with her family and friends. Stone said, “I really like

spending time with my boyfriend and friends and family when I have time for it.” Following high school she is planning to move to Hawaii and study journalism. “After high school I am hoping to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa and major in their journalism program there,” Stone said. Her goal in life is to one day work at a magazine that allows her to travel, write and incorporate her photography skills. “My dream goal would be to go into National Geography,” Stone said. Preceding Mary Cassatt is another female artist, Sofonisba Anguissola, who received much acclaim during her career. Anguissola was born into a noble but somewhat impoverished family. Her father, however, saw to it she and her sisters had an education that was not only well-rounded but that included apprenticeships with excellent painters in fine art. This opened the door for the first time to allow females to study with actual thriving artists during the Italian Renaissance. Anguissola was born in 1532 in Cremona, Italy. She died in 1625 in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. As a female artist, she had more restrictions such as not being allowed to study anatomy of the human figure because it was considered vulgar. In spite of this, and likely because her father kept her in the eye of members of the Spanish court of King Phillip II, it was only within a short time she became a solid contender for any court portraiture along with becoming lauded for less formal but well-liked paintings of members of the court and their families. Her talent and personality grew and was noted by Michelangelo. This led to an informal relationship in which Michelangelo mentored her through an exchange of drawings. Since she was considered a noblewoman, it was considered inappropriate for her to receive payment for any of her works. This didn’t deter the subjects who sat for her as they were innovative in providing her some valuable gifts as a form of thanks and gratitude. She broke with tradition in another way: she didn’t sign the portraits she created in Spain. This created some consternation later when many male artists were given credit for her work, probably because of the continuing bias against women artists. Art specialists in later years have tried to remedy this, but it is a difficult process and sometimes creates controversy. During her years as an artist, Anguissola had the singular honor of being invited to be a lady-inwaiting to Elisabeth of Valois, the queen of Spain, who was married to Philip II of Spain. Since Philip’s family ruled most of Europe and the New World, you can only imagine how this appointment helped Anguissola and her family. She was now a member of a close circle including the most powerful rulers in Europe. She thus secured a favorable place for her entire family. She became one of the most influential female artists during the Renaissance. She lived a long and healthy and productive life. When she was 92, the emerging artist, Anthony van Dyck, painted her portrait. He made many positive comments about her abilities, such as her mental aptitude, and her famous sharpness of mind. In spite of her advancing years, she was a brilliant conversationalist and discussed art and the principles of painting in which Van Dyck later said, “My conversation with her taught me more about

The daring raid of John Dillinger and his gang on the local police station in 1934 will be relived and commemorated Sept. 11-12, during the Dillinger Raid. The two-day event will feature tours of the Old Jail Museum, craft vendors, a classic car show, children’s games, and tours of downtown Warsaw depicting how Dillinger impacted the city. The 1934 car Dillinger stole when he escaped from jail in Crown Point will tentatively be on display. The car was originally owned by Lake County Sheriff Lillian Holley. It was stolen and hostages were taken, who were later released when the daring escape from Crown Point occurred. The car was recently featured on the television program “Destination Truth” on the Discovery Channel. The car’s showing in Warsaw will be the second time in 87 years the car has been on display to the public. Dillinger and his gangs robbed numerous banks in the area during their crime spree and their crimes netted Dillinger the title of “Public Enemy Number One.” Lore surrounding Dillinger’s brush with

Warsaw, as well as stories and artifacts relating to his life, will be featured. The Dillinger raid will be held from 9-5 p.m. Sept. 11 and 1-5 p.m. Sept. 12. For more information, call the Old Jail Museum at (574) 2691078 or check out the Facebook page of the Kosciusko County Historical Society, the sponsor of the event.

Cardinal Services receives AWS Foundation grant Cardinal Services has been notified that they have been awarded an AWS Foundation Vantage Grant in the amount of $98,000. Earlier this year, Cardinal received a $75,000 planning grant from AWS Foundation. This led to a six-month planning period during which Cardinal worked with consultants gathering data and analyzing organizational challenges and opportunities. The goal being to achieve transformational change at Cardinal that positively impacts the community at large. Cardinal is one of only five organizations to be

awarded a Vantage Grant. AWS Foundation CEO Patti Hays said, “The Vantage Grant will allow them to provide services or processes in their organizations that might otherwise have been years away from their existing resources. Hays goes on to say that direct nonprofit service providers rarely have the time, personnel, or budgets to look beyond their daily operational demands. Cardinal Services Executive Director Matt Boren explained that the Vantage funds will allow Cardinal to accomplish several goals

that until now, were only imagined. Among these, Boren said to look for the addition of a behavioral consultant and music therapist, structured family caregiving services, and perhaps the most highly anticipated: a 24-hour call center, which will give on-duty staff, persons served, and families the support they need when they need it. Industry leaders tout call centers as a key to quality services. Boren went on to say that for years, Cardinal has reimagined what day services programs could look like if they had the funding.

Vantage funds will allow current classrooms to be recreated as club rooms each stocked with the items necessary to provide a unique experience designed to connect individuals with people in their community sharing similar interests and passions. Club room themes will rotate and to-date include culinary arts, technology, performing arts, fitness, gardening, and photography. To enhance employment opportunities for people with disabilities, Cardinal will also be adding an opportunity lab. Cardinal will

partner with area businesses to offer training and certification for good jobs in our community. Boren explained that the lab will be a space between sheltered work and community employment. It will aid employers in addressing workforce challenges. Boren concluded by thanking AWS Foundation and pointing out that the grant comes as Cardinal is working toward renovating the facility at 504 North Bay Drive, Warsaw, making the timing perfect for re-envisioning and building for the future.

Lt. Gov. Crouch urges employers to hire Hoosiers with disabilities Indiana Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch urged Indiana employers to solve their workforce crisis by hiring individuals with disabilities. Crouch made her comments during a recent visit to New Hope of Indiana in Indianapolis as part of her inauguration celebration. “Nationally, the unemployment rate for individuals with developmental disabilities is over 70%,” Crouch said. “Right now, as I travel the state, I see more ‘Now Hiring’ signs than I have in my entire career as a public official. And people with disabilities are ready to step up and rejoin the workforce to bring Indiana to its most prosperous place in years.” Crouch urged businesses and community leaders to reach out to local service providers and form partnerships to address their workforce needs by learning how individuals with disabilities are a reliable, enthusiastic, talented workforce that is too often overlooked. Crouch was also presented with a Special Advocate Award from INARF, the state’s association for providers of services to people with disabilities. “The lieutenant governor has been an incredible advocate for

Hoosiers with disabilities and their caregivers,” said New Hope of Indiana CEO Allison Wharry. “She was instrumental during the last legislative session in the successful fight for higher wages for those who care for our state’s most vulnerable citizens. She is a true champion for the disability community and we could not be more grateful.” During the event and a tour of New Hope, artisans with developmental disabilities presented Crouch with handmade gifts and a basket of “kindness rocks” for Crouch to leave in locations around the state during her travels. New Hope provides community-based residential services throughout central Indiana and a variety of therapy, day, vocational and transition services to more than 400 individuals with disabilities every year. For over 40 years, New Hope of Indiana has supported individuals and families, encouraging them to live their most independent lives. Through services for individuals with disabilities and advocacy efforts, New Hope of Indiana is making an impact in communities every day. For more information, visit www.newhopeofindiana.org.

Just call them gooney birds T h e weather ear- OUTDOOR NOTES ly one Saturday morning, for about an hour before dawn, was frightful. Flashes of lightning made the entire sky as bright as day. By Neil Case Each flash was followed by a crack and rumble of thunder. Rain poured down, so heavy when I got up and looked out the window I couldn’t see across the road in front of our house. I went to the bathroom, washed and dressed and as I dressed, the lightning and thunder stopped and the rain became a sprinkle. Though it was still very early when I finished dressing, I went to the kitchen, got my breakfast, took my breakfast to the dining room, sat down at the table, ate and stared out the window. The rain became a sprinkle and as the sky got light, birds began flying back and forth between the trees and bushes in the yard and the bird feeders outside the dining room window.

There were the usual summer feathered visitors, black-capped chickadees, white-breasted nuthatches, tufted titmice and goldfinches, downy and red-bellied woodpeckers, cardinals and blue jays, house sparrows, red-winged blackbirds and two mourning doves. A friend of my daughter’s was coming to visit that afternoon and my daughter and her friend planned to ride horseback in our pasture. But when I saw the weather, I knew they weren’t going to ride their horses in our pasture that day. After the torrential rain that morning, our pasture would be a sea of mud, a slippery sea of mud. My daughter’s friend did visit that day. But they didn’t ride horseback. They went to the barn, talked and groomed their horses. That afternoon there was more lightning, thunder and torrential rain. I was in the dining room watching the birds at the feeders outside, but when the rain became a torrent, the birds disappeared, went into shelter, the woodpeckers into holes in the trees I assumed, the other birds into thickets of leaves in the trees and bushes. The next day my daughter’s friend returned and the girls did ride, but as the day before, not in our pasture. They rode along the side of the road. I stayed home, sat by the dining room window most of the time, watched the birds outside the window and thought about the article I’d started. Here I thought as I sat and watched the birds, is an example of one way birds deal with stormy

weather. They hide. Another way, of course, is to migrate. I see examples of migrants at my feeders, a redbreasted nuthatch for example. Redbreasted nuthatches nest farther north and I don’t see them at my feeders every winter, just sometimes I do. Slate-colored juncos are other winter visitors to my feeders and I’ve seen a white-crowned sparrow and white-throated sparrows, other more northern nesters, now and then. I saw a Harris’s sparrow at my feeders once. That was in northwest Indiana where I lived before I moved to my present home in Noble County, north-central Indiana. A flash of lightning, a crack of thunder warned the riders the downpour was returning and they headed for home. They got back to our barn shortly before the torrent resumed. They unsaddled their horses, brushed them, came in the house and joined me in the dining room, watching birds at the feeders. We had refreshments and I told tales of bird watching, including serving on a destroyer when I was in the Navy and being on the ship when it put in to Midway Island where I saw albatrosses. The albatrosses of Midway have a wingspan of 11 or 12 feet, stay in the air for days at a time, fly over the ocean and drop to the ocean surface of the water only to pick up fish. They are as graceful in the air as swallows, when their feet touch land they often somersault, appear very awkward and sailors call them gooney birds.

grounds, you will see not only are the parents involved with the day, but also the school children. Numerous vendors will be on site offering fresh local produce, antiques, arts and crafts blacksmithing, rug weaving, paintings and much more. When you visit the field, you can see even more, including steam tractors, a saw mill, threshing, old “hit and miss” engines and plowing done by true horsepower. There are plenty of fun things to do for the children, including train rides, an animal petting zoo and even tug of war contests with a team of workhorses on the other side. This year’s feature event is horse-drawn equipment, including a six-horse hitch, which is a “must see,” according to Dennis Hochstetler, one of the event’s organizers. “Of course you know the Amish — they have to have lots of food, so be hungry when you come because we’ll have ham and bean soup made over an open fire, brats with all the fixings, burgers, coffee, hot and cold cider and, best of all, the huge bake sale that the ladies in the church made,” said Hochstetler. “You need to be there!” Admission to the event is $5 per adult, and is free for those 13 and younger. For further information, call (574) 546-1246 and leave a message for a return call.
