THE DREAM ENDURES

n September 1919, 26 young women arrived at 400 The Fenway and became Emmanuel College’s first class—the Class of ’23. This fall, we welcomed another class of ’23, this one comprising nearly 600 young women and men. For these classes, and all in between, Emmanuel has served as a profound source of empowerment—and as a call to build a more just and compassionate society. In recent issues of Emmanuel Magazine, I recalled key eras in the College’s history. In this edition, I would like to reflect on themes that are part of the fabric of our academic community and that continue to anchor and guide us into our second century.

Saints for Our Times

Emmanuel’s Centennial Year coincided with the 50th anniversary of the canonization of St. Julie Billiart, who established the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1804. It was also in 2019 that Pope Francis canonized St. John Henry Newman, a 19th century English cardinal whose writings have influenced the development of Catholic higher education for over a century and a half. Both saints believed in the liberating power of education. In his book The Idea of a University, Newman stressed the importance of allowing “the intellect [to] safely range and speculate.” For St. Julie, education not only opened the mind; it also gave rise to real, life-changing opportunities. Through the schools founded by St. Julie and members of her global women’s religious congregation, young people grew in knowledge, skill and dignity, prompting St. Julie to call education “the greatest work on earth.” Saint Julie and Saint John Henry Newman remain towering figures in the universal Church—and at Emmanuel. This is evident in our continuing commitment to the liberal arts and sciences and to real-world learning experiences throughout Boston and beyond. Through vibrant discussions with faculty and one another, students embrace the life of the mind and grow as women and men of discernment, foresight and wisdom. Through internships they gain the know-how and professional contacts to excel in the 21st century workplace. As a result, our graduates each year go on to master’s and doctoral programs at prestigious universities and to positions in a broad range of professions, making the most of possibilities once limited to their dreams.

Difference Makers

Sister Marie Augusta Neal, SNDdeN ’42, Professor of Sociology from 1953 to 1991, often asked her students, “Why is it that two-thirds of the world is poor, when we have resources and technologies sufficient to provide well for all, but we do not?” This thought-provoking question runs to the core of our identity as a college rooted in the charism of the

Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and in the social teachings of the Catholic Church. As countless alumni can attest, an Emmanuel education does more than unlock potential; it spurs students to look beyond themselves and dedicate their talents to the greater good. Today we continue to challenge students to recognize the “root causes” of social problems and the larger structures that underlie racism and injustice. This is reflected in our recently adopted Institutional Learning Outcomes, which express our commitment to forming leaders with a deep sense of “personal, ethical and civic responsibility” who understand the “joy and purpose of serving others.” Students, for their part, continue to carry on a centurylong tradition of activism at Emmanuel, one that reaches from women’s suffrage in the 1920s to Civil Rights in the 1960s to Women’s Rights in the 1970s—right up to the pressing causes of our own time.

Never Stand Still

As the needs of students and society have evolved over the decades, Emmanuel has demonstrated an agility and a willingness to reinvent, work with others and affirm its mission. That entrepreneurial spirit remains vital in today’s constantly changing external environment. In the past two years, we have introduced innovative academic programs in fields such as data analytics, mathematical modeling, migration studies, and political communication. Capitalizing on our incomparable location in the heart of Boston, close to business and innovation powerhouses, we have assured that all students complete an internship as part of their undergraduate experience. Just this past September, we opened a four-year undergraduate nursing program within our newly established School of Nursing and Clinical Sciences. We were delighted to name the school in honor of the generosity of Maureen Murphy Wilkens ’56, in whose name we dedicated our state-of-the-art science center a decade ago.

ADDRESSING THE CRITICAL ETHICAL ISSUES OF OUR TIME In messages to the College community, Sister Janet has continued to address topics of national and international importance, including immigration, the environment, gun violence, and racial and religious intolerance. Here are excerpts.

“Over the decades, students have played an important part in ensuring Emmanuel College’s attentiveness to the hopes and needs of each generation. Today, the voices of black and brown students are particularly vital, as our society further wakes to the enduring impact of institutional racism. Increasingly, our culture is recognizing the reality that the suffering and contributions of black Americans are not on the periphery of our country’s story but at its center.” ON THE BLACK STUDENT UNION’S “CALL TO ACTION” – OCTOBER 2019

“I encourage all of us to press our elected leaders to confront this public safety issue in a serious, bipartisan and effective manner. At the same time, we recognize that the roots of mass violence run deep and require solutions far beyond the scope of legislative or policy changes. There is no better gauge of the strength of our academic programs than the achievements of our students. Last spring, two seniors won Fulbright grants to teach English overseas, making 2019 the ninth consecutive year that Emmanuel students have received this prestigious award. In addition, two students recently were accepted into research programs funded by the National Science Foundation, and a team of Emmanuel students took first prize at an intercollegiate business economics competition. Meanwhile, across the disciplines, our students continue to co-author articles for academic journals and to present research at national and international conferences. As we have changed, our foundational commitments have remained constant—commitments to intellectual inquiry, to a strong sense of community, and to service rooted in Catholic values. Class of ’59 summed it up perfectly at a recent alumni panel discussion. “We are in tune with the times,” she said, “but we’re still us.” To ensure Emmanuel’s strength in today’s competitive and complex higher education landscape, we recently launched the Campaign for Our Second Century. This landmark fundraising effort seeks to raise $50 million in support of key college priorities. I am delighted to share that we have so far raised over $25 million toward that $50 million goal. (For more on the campaign, see page 39.) As in the past, our success depends on the support, ideas, and creativity of you, our alumni and friends. By your backing, and by the example of your lives, you inspire our students to reach their highest aspirations and to serve as beacons of leadership and integrity in the 21st century. Clemente Field Gets a Fresh Look Funded by a $1.4 million grant from the Yawkey Foundation, Emmanuel’s home athletic field, Roberto Clemente Field, underwent extensive resurfacing during the summer and now boasts new artificial turf and a new track. In 2009, the College partnered with the City of Boston and the Yawkey Foundation to complete a comprehensive restoration of the facility to provide a home competition venue for soccer, softball and lacrosse, and recreation space for the entire neigh-

n October 29, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker visited the Emmanuel College campus, touring the New Residence Hall and speaking at a breakfast event on his current agenda for the state. The meeting, attended by a group of area business, hospital, health care and academic leaders, was an opportunity for the governor to speak about his administration’s work related to transportation, health care, the opioid crisis and education. Gov. Baker praised Emmanuel for its ability to be nimble in times of change and for preparing students to work in growing fields, particularly in the Commonwealth. Gov. Baker congratulated Sr. Janet Eisner, SNDdeN, on her 40 years as president and success in the “space and place Emmanuel has been operating in for a century. It is a huge accomplishment, and Emmanuel has never been in a better place to fulfill its mission.”

YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT In winter 2019, 12 students from Emmanuel College’s Youth in Government delegation traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the 7th session of the Campus YMCA Congress (CYC), where they were honored as the 2019 Chapter of the Year and recognized as a Chapter of Distinction. The CYC is a student-run professional development conference focused on developing innovative policy solutions to pressing contemporary issues. Participation in the conference aims to empower students through civic engagement, train public servant leaders and emphasize policy over politics.

HONORS AND AWARDS Gerdon, Emmanuel Awarded More Than $350K by National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently awarded Emmanuel College more than $350,000 to support a project under the direction of Associate Professor of Chemistry and Department Chair Aren Gerdon, Ph.D., to mentor undergraduate students researching in biomaterials, mineralization and biomimetics and to impact STEM education on the secondary level. Dr. Gerdon's project, “RUI: DNA and nanoparticle assemblies as biomimetic templates for calcium phosphate mineralization,” will primarily support student researchers in their first or second year, and ensure these students contribute to the larger scientific community. This award from NSF, which will be distributed over the course of three years, is Dr. Gerdon's second as principal investigator in the last six years and the College's seventh in the last decade, now totaling more than $2M.

Davis Educational Foundation Awards College $157K

The Davis Educational Foundation awarded Emmanuel $157,000 to support the College’s review and assessment of its Institutional Learning Goals (ILG) and general education curriculum. The grant will distribute over the course of three years as Emmanuel embarks on a multi-phased, campus-wide assessment of its academic mission with the goal of ensuring the continued vitality of the College's educational mission as it enters its second century. “A liberal arts and sciences education plays a critical role in bolstering the employability of graduates and weaving the development of critical job skills into the very curriculum,” said Chief Academic Officer, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Professor of Biology Josef Kurtz. “Students emerge as critical thinkers capable of finding solutions to the challenges facing their communities.”

Emmanuel Awarded Cummings Foundation Grant

Emmanuel College was selected as one of 100 Boston-area nonprofits to receive a $100,000 grant through Cummings Foundation’s “$100K for 100” program. The grant will help support service initiatives through Emmanuel’s Cardinal Seán O’Malley Center for Mission and Ministry. The $100K for 100 program supports nonprofits that are based in and primarily serve Middlesex, Essex and Suffolk counties. Through this place-based initiative, Cummings Foundation aims to give back in the area where it owns commercial buildings, all of which are managed, at no cost to the Foundation, by its

affiliate Cummings Properties. Founded in 1970 by Bill Cummings, the Woburn-based commercial real estate firm leases and manages 10 million square feet of space, the majority of which exclusively benefits the Foundation.

By demonstrating continued dedication to high-impact educational practices, Emmanuel has once again been named one of the nation’s Colleges of Distinction. The College received special recognition for its career development initiatives and its programs in business and education. WHAT’S BUZZING IN THE LIBRARY COLLEGE CONTINUES FULBRIGHT SUCCESS For the ninth year in a row, Emmanuel students won Fulbright grants to teach English overseas. Amanda Farina ’19 and Madison Brennan ’19 are teaching in Italy and Malaysia, respectively, during the 2019-20 academic year.

Through a grant from the Colleges of the Fenway Center for Sustainability and the Environment, the Library Learning Commons is now home to an observational beehive, in which bees are free to come and go to forage for floral pollen. The bee population has been declining since 2015, but studies have shown that bees thrive in cities, and that urban bees are more resilient than their country counterparts. The Urban Garden at the Notre Dame Campus is also home to a bee colony. Why are bees so important? According to the Boston-based Best Bees Company, it is estimated that one-third of the typical American diet depends on pollination by bees. Absent such pollination, nearly 100 fruit and vegetable crops would be wiped out, as well as grass-fed beef and dairy.

DANCE MARATHON RAISES MORE THAN $100K FOR BOSTON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL After another year of tireless fundraising and programming, the eighth annual Emmanuel College Dance Marathon (ECDM) raised more than $100,000 to benefit Boston Children’s Hospital in 2019. The program culminated in a 12-hour, all-night event last March. ECDM is one of the most anticipated events held at Emmanuel each year. Last year, Emmanuel’s program ranked as the #1 Dance Marathon fundraiser in Boston and in the top five in New England. Nationwide, ECDM placed among the top 20 for schools with fewer than 12,000 undergraduate students.

SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWS More than 40 students presented their research and academic projects from this year’s summer research fellowship program at a poster session in October. The fellows collaborated with faculty to complete over a dozen research projects across the departments of biology, business & economics, chemistry, communication & media studies, education, mathematics, political science, psychology and sociology. In addition, two students earned the Emmanuel College Travel Fellowship for Advanced Study: Psychology major Skylar Steffes ’21 traveled to the Oregon Research Institute to study orthorexia with senior research scientist Dr. Eric Stice, while history and secondary education major Rachel Prevost ’21 traveled to Helsinki, Finland, to study creativity in the classroom.

Introducing “Insights,” the Official Blog of Emmanuel College Focusing on the needs and curiosities of both prospective and current students, during the Spring 2019 semester Emmanuel launched a new blog called “Insights.” This collaborative, College-wide blog offers members of Emmanuel’s administration, faculty and staff to share their authentic viewpoints, perspectives and thought leadership. With posts ranging from tips for students on how to make the most of their time on campus to scholarly research shared by professors, Insights provides the College an opportunity to showcase a broad range of voices and allows readers the chance to seek out, learn from and make connections with the greater Emmanuel community. Campagna Receives National Recognition for Athletics Dedication Emmanuel College Assistant Athletic Director Dan Campagna ’07 was recently honored as a “2019 Sports 40 Under 40” recipient at the National High School Athletics Coaches Association (NHSACA) convention in late June. Sponsored by Coach and Athletic Director Magazine, the 40 Under 40 honor recognizes young industry professionals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to their sport(s) or departments and innovation and industry leadership within the high school, collegiate, professional and industry athletic professions. Campagna is one of only two recipients of this national award in the collegiate ranks this year.

Women’s Athletics Wins GNAC 2018-19 Commissioner’s Cup LAWSON NAMED DIVISION III COACH OF THE YEAR Emmanuel College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Danny Lawson was named the Northeast Region Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year for the 2018-2019 season on D3Hoops.com. In his first season with the Saints, Lawson led the team to an 18-8 record, the second-highest total single-season wins in the program’s history. The Saints showed a 14.5 game improvement from the team’s previous season and earned the right to host a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoff game for the first time in 10 seasons, where they won and advanced to the semifinals. Appointed in June 2018, Lawson is the third head coach in the program’s 18-year history.

As they walked toward a magnificent glass structure raised for the occasion on the College’s central quadrangle, guests could observe symbols of Sister Janet’s transformational presidency: a modern student center, a state-of-the-art science center, and a new 18-story apartment-style residence hall. The buildings told a broader story of institutional momentum, one highlighted by a four-fold increase in enrollment, innovative academic and student life programs, grants from the National Science Foundation and other prestigious funders, new endowed professorships and lecture series, and countless other examples of continued transformation. These and many other advances—which have taken place amid seismic changes in higher education—point to Sister Janet’s attentiveness to the “signs of the times” and her commitment to adapting to the evolving needs of each generation of students. As was the theme of the Centennial kick-off event in March 2019, “Ever Changing, Ever Emmanuel,” Sister Janet has continued the legacy of her predecessors—unafraid to pivot amidst external changes. The past four decades provide numerous examples of Sister Janet’s entrepreneurial spirit. In 2000, after a careful analysis of data and trends, the College made the decision to admit young men to its previously all-women’s four-year undergraduate program. That same year, the College entered into a 75-year ground-lease agreement with Merck & Co., enabling the company to begin construction of an 11-story, 300,000-square-foot research facility on a back parcel of the campus in exchange for a substantial one-time upfront payment. In May 2019, a feature column in The Boston Globe by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Thomas Farragher, entitled “Second Founder,” shared this story of transformative leadership and deep commitment to mission. It was well-deserved public recognition of Sister Janet’s position as the longest-serving woman college president in the country. Farragher wrote, Nobody lasts 40 years in a college president’s office anymore. Nobody lasts that long at anything anymore. Not in Boston. Not in academia, whose most frequently employed adjective is cutthroat. You need look not much further than recent Globe headlines about higher education tumult to know that in her field, Sister Janet Eisner is a unicorn. A rare breed. A patch of blue in otherwise stormy skies.

To commemorate this longevity, Sister Janet’s longtime colleague and friend, Emmanuel’s Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer Sister Anne Mary Donovan, SNDdeN, announced at the 40th Anniversary Gala a recent decision by the Board of Trustees to name the College’s iconic Administration Building in Sister Janet’s honor. For a woman who had spent decades of her life living, teaching and serving as president within the walls of the collegiate gothic building, it was a profoundly moving moment. Speaking to guests that evening, Sister Janet reflected,

“Our founders gave us the name Emmanuel, which means ‘God with us.’ And I believe that to the core of my being. It is very real to us as we experience God’s amazing action in our work, in our lives and in the journeys of our students and graduates. For me this is a source of great joy.” The celebrations continued into Centennial Alumni Weekend. On the afternoon of June 1, nearly 700 alumni, faculty and friends came together for a joyful Liturgy in Sister Janet’s honor. The Liturgy was celebrated by Reverend J. Bryan Hehir and featured a gathering hymn called “EverBeginning” with lyrics written by Sister Evelyn Ronan, SNDdeN ’63, as well as an original composition by Sister Janet’s nephew Joseph Taff entitled “Ah, qu’il est bon!” Reverend Hehir reflected on Sister Janet’s prominent place in the Church in a moving Homily. “The Cardinal, often faced with complicated questions, will pick up the phone and ask her for advice. He spoke of Sister Janet [at the gala], saying she represents the chapter in the Church in which religious women were so foundational to the survival and success of Catholicism in this country.” He continued, “Finally, it’s good for the world that Emmanuel is here. And Sister Janet is here. Boston, our country and our world need what Emmanuel seeks to provide and to produce in the lives of its graduates.” In her own reflections at the Liturgy, Sister Janet looked to the future and the impact of Emmanuel College. “More than ever, our world needs the light of those who question, who create, and who consistently look beyond themselves to build a more just, peaceful and sustainable world for all.”

MARY JO SKAYHAN ROGERS ’77 For Mary Jo Skayhan Rogers ’77, Emmanuel continues to be a place full of meaning and opportunity. In 2016, she and her spouse, Brian, established the Mary Jo Skayhan Rogers ’77 Endowed Scholarship in honor of Mary Jo’s 40th class reunion and the College’s Centennial. To date, the endowed scholarship has aided 15 students in realizing their dreams of an Emmanuel education. A member of Emmanuel’s Board of Trustees, Mary Jo remains ever connected to the College, helping to ensure Emmanuel continues its strong trajectory into its second century. Recently, Emmanuel Magazine caught up with Mary Jo to discuss the impact of her Emmanuel experience, her thoughts on the College’s bright future and why she values giving back to her alma mater.

MARY JO SKAYHAN ROGERS ’77 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

Jenny Jobe ’20 hile many college students spend the summer before senior year hitting the beach, Jenny Jobe ’20 stayed true to the motto she’s had on repeat since she started at Emmanuel. “Seek out every opportunity, and make the most of everything.” Jobe stayed on Emmanuel’s campus, taking advantage of the College’s location in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area. She engaged in summer research alongside Emmanuel Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology Janel Cabrera in the genetics department at Harvard Medical School, while simultaneously participating in Harvard’s 10-week Summer Honors Undergraduate Research Program (SHURP). As a double major in biology and sociology following Emmanuel’s pre-medical curriculum, she also made time to work as a medical scribe in the dermatology department at Boston Children’s Hospital. “Being able to shadow a physician as he engages with and treats patients has been an incredible glimpse into what could be my future career,” says Jobe, who completed more than 30 hours of training on medical terminology and policies. “I’m interested in both public health and global health, and I’m planning to go to graduate school for a master’s in public health and possibly to medical school,” she says. The Johnston, Rhode Island, native wanted to pursue her college education in the city, and considers herself lucky that her journey led her to Emmanuel College. “My experience here has been amazing,” she says.“I love being able to explore multiple subjects outside my major, and I’ve learned so much from courses like anatomy and physiology and genetics,” she says. “And all of my sociology classes have been a ten-out-of-ten.” Jobe has also been involved with the Office of Mission & Ministry, volunteering at organizations such as the Pine Street Inn, acting as a College ambassador in the 1804 Society and traveling to Phoenix for Alternative Spring Break. Now in her senior year, Jobe has no intention of slowing down, and she has one more role to add to her resume, as a resident assistant in Loretto Hall. “I want to help build community among the first-year students,” she says. “I feel like I’ve never been in a better position to tell them what I always tell myself: ‘Seek out every opportunity, and make the most of everything.’”
