Memphis Design

This is an example of modern Memphis Design from a stock photo:

This follows my research of nostalgia and retro.

The Memphis Group consisted of Italian designers who created highly influential products in the 1980s. They disagreed with conformist approach at the time and challenged the idea that products had to follow conventional shapes, colours, textures, and patterns.

This is the ‘Super lamp‘ created by Martine Bedine. It is made of metal, which has been painted and lacquered.

I include this inforamtion in blog due to how this style has impacted the works of ‘retro’ design. While created in the 1980s, the colourful geometric style became more popular and widely accepted in the 1990s, where it influenced the design of furniture, architecture, and household items. This links to the idea of nostalgia, where people are now feeling nostalgic over this design this and therefore is making a comeback in a variety of media.

An example of its comeback can actually be seen on some t-shirts I own. The company Mokuyobi Threads have took inspiration from this design style and is just one example of ‘retro’ making a comeback in art, entertainment and media.
