Relief Printmaking
Relief printmaking is when you cut or etch a printing surface so that the only thing left is the design to be printed. A form of relief printmaking is woodcutting. Most relief prints are monochromatic.

Etchings
Etching is the method of making prints from a metal plate, usually a copper plate. First, the plate is covered with a waxy ground which keeps it safe from any acidic materials. An artist may then scratch off the ground with a pointed etching needle, of varying thickness, where they want the lines to be in their artwork. Those lines then hold ink and when put on a paper, the design transfers to the paper, making the print.

Lithographs
Lithographs is another form of printmaking where no etching is required. Instead artists use greasy crayons or a pencil to draw the original image onto a smooth stone tablet and make a copy of it. This was a very effective way for people who could not afford great artists' work, who instead just had a lithograph copy of the art piece.

Woodcuts
Woodcuts is a form of a relief printmaking technique. Woodcuts is when the image is carved on a surface of wood. The artist then carves away from the image, removing the wood around the areas of the printing parts. These areas are removed with gouges. The raised areas left on the wood's surface are the areas that will appear in the print when the artist presses a paper on the wood. The reverse image is then printed on the paper.

Hatching
Hatching is a technique that can be used in paintings, drawings, prints and many other types of medias. Hatching is when the artist makes repeated lines to create areas of shading. Cross hatching is when those angular lines go in two directions. The less spaced out the lines are from each other, the darker those shaded areas will be.
