Much like all of us, Bill always wanted a Malvern Star Dragstar when he was a kid but unfortunately for him, that dream never eventuated. Feeling like he had missed out on something special in his childhood, he vowed that one day, he would eventually own one.
Bill started looking online to purchase a bike, but after seeing several very-average rides and feeling a little dejected; he thankfully stumbled onto our website.
Overly impressed with what he saw, he was soon on the phone to Clayton and talking about a comprehensive build plan.
The build was to be very, very extensive. Bill wasn’t fussed about having a traditional or factory-styled bike; he wanted something that really stood out from the rest and something that would be the ideal showpiece in his house. He had waited his whole life to own a bike this and there were to be no corners cut.
The colour of the bike was going to be a massive factor, as was the inclusion of several accessories that Bill was lusting after. This had to be the ultimate Dragstar; nothing else would do.
Starting the project, a frame and fork from our personal collection was sent off to the media blaster and came back naked and ready for us to perform our magic on.
Both items were etch-primed, and any imperfections repaired promptly before the bike was primed numerous times in two-pack.
Clayton then set about rubbing down the frame several times until he felt it was ready for that stunning El Nino Candy Orange from DNA paints. The colour looks incredible in the sun and highlights the beautiful Dragstar lines.
With the paintwork looking super-impressive, and then really coming alive after one of our decal sets were applied, Clayton decided it was time to get busy with adding an extensive amount of re-chromed parts. We went to town on this bike, and it certainly looks that way too.
The chain guard and mounting bracket were re-chromed as were the stem, handlebars and sissy bar.
For a different look, Clayton had the mudguards re-chromed too. The original items are stainless, and we normally polish them, but this time Bill wanted the ‘full bling’ look so the chrome got the go-ahead and it was a great idea! It is something that we will be using again on some of our custom-builds in the future.
Rounding out the re-chromed components are the bottom bracket cups & axle, the crankset, headset, brake callipers and the Araya rims. The chrome work itself is truly exceptional.
As one would expect, we tracked down as many NOS parts for this build as we could. It was integral to make this bike special and Bill requested several items like the front pack rack with the matching lights and generator, along with the Sanyo speedometer.
The Shimano GT7 shifter was a necessity as were the front and rear Shimano hubs. The cat-eye wheel, sissy bar reflectors and seat are all NOS too.
The list of new parts we fitted is like a Christmas wishlist. Clayton installed all-new braking components – levers, pivot bolts, line inners and outer and pads too.
New tyres, tubes and liners were fitted. Initially, we planned on running whitewall tyres, but after some deliberation, we decided they weren’t required, and the bike now has more of a ‘muscle’ look about it. The re-chromed rims are laced with new stainless steel spokes.
Little bits like the pedals, stand, chain, bell and the headset bottom bracket bearings are new too.
The build of the bike was a little longer than usual, as Clayton wanted to be meticulous. He slowly pieced the bike together over several days, making sure everything was spot on so the bike could look its best.
Attention to detail was paramount on this build, and it shows, the bike has turned out sensational.
The curveball of this build is the fact that Bill, the client, lives in Sydney and he wanted the bike delivered in one piece – so to make sure the bike arrives safe and sound, we had Aussie Crates here in Perth build a custom enclosed, shipping crate to suit.
The bike is headed to Sydney shortly, and we are sure that Bill will be over the moon when he takes ownership of his childhood dream. It was a real pleasure working with him on this build and, we are proud to have created such an incredible ride.
