It’s 17 years to the day since Brant Webb and Todd Russell were rescued after the Beaconsfield Mine collapsed. Sadly, we also remember Larry Knight who was tragically killed in the disaster. Brant and Todd walked out of the mine on 9 May 2006 – also a Budget day, albeit one under John Howard and former Treasurer Peter Costello. But, Brant calls today 'Freedom Day'. Today on Budget Day 2023, it remains one of the biggest things I have ever been involved in, alongside the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
Pulling people out of dark man made holes…cheers
17 years ago since they were rescued. Time goes so fast.

I was there the day Richard Carleton died - the other tragic outcome of that event. My family and I were on holidays from the NT where I worked for Rio Tinto. We were going to pay our respects to Larry on behalf of Rio Tinto when upon pulling up outside the bakery at Beaconsfield my wife opened the door of the car a little too eagerly and hit Bill. Sorry Bill...
I remember it well Bill ...an incredible achievement being part of having these 2 men rescued.🙏..and I'm sure this Budget will be far more fair and just under this Labor govt than under that govt 17 years ago 🙏🌈
Tell them to wander down the road for a job with us at Hellyer Metals Ltd. Safety is the priority! Hope they are doing well.
And you were the Union man Bill. Remember it well.
It was then we realised that Australia had an emerging leader in Bill Shorten who would always fight for people that may be disadvantaged as he does today through the resetting the NDIS.

11moI am very honoured to call Brant Webb my best mate. I don’t have to explain why, because we both know why. Love you mate.
