Description

Kow Swamp is a freshwater lake and wetland located in the Murray River valley, in the Mallee region of north-central Victoria, Australia. Its name comes from the Aboriginal word Ghow, which describes the white gypsum soil found in the area. The lake has a circumference of 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) and is approximately 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) long and 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) wide.

Kow Swamp can be found in the Shire of Campaspe, just 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) west of Gunbower and 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) south of Leitchville. The area is easily accessible by car from the nearby towns.

In the late 19th century, Kow Swamp was primarily managed by local irrigation trusts for off-river storage. In 1900, its capacity was increased to an impressive 51,730 megalitres (1.138×1010 imp gal; 1.367×1010 US gal). Today, it is primarily used for water storage.

Kow Swamp is a popular spot for recreational fishing, with a wide variety of fish species to catch that includes Murray Cod, Golden Perch, and Redfin. History enthusiasts will enjoy the ancient archaeological finds that have been discovered around the swamp, while nature lovers can enjoy birdwatching and spotting other wildlife around the wetlands.
