Although both animals belong to the same family of marine life, shrimps fall under ‘Pleocyemata’ while prawn species belong to ‘Dendrobranchiata’ species.

The difference in habitat places both the animals in different food chains. Shrimps live exclusively in salty waters and swim to transport but Prawns spend their lives crawling along the floors of fresh waters.

Shrimps spend their entire life marinating in salt water and hence their taste is noticeably salty and savory whereas Prawns who are picked from fresh water have a natural sweet taste.

Shrimp is easily available at grocery stores, seafood markets and in restaurants for a much cheaper price than prawns. The price depends on lots of things like if it is fresh or frozen and peeled or shell-on, etc.
