Typographers: Paula Scher
Paula Scher is one of the most prominent names in the Graphic Design world. Her innovative typography work and eagle eye for detail boosted her to the top of her game, and she is currently the first female senior member of the prestigious Pentagon Graphic Design company, who she has been with since 1991.
Scher has her roots in Fine Art, having graduated from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1970. Her artistic skills are reflected in her design work as she uses typography in an emotive and artistic way, rather than purely in a print style.
During her ongoing reign, she has designed for the biggest record labels, but she also worked as a freelance designer from 1979 to 1984. As she designed for a wide variety of clients over these years, her signature style developed. The vast majority of Scher’s work features strong, bold typography and the obvious use of grids and structured geometric shapes.
During her time designing record covers, she experimented with photography, typography by hand, and a huge variety of composition ideas, all while finding the best way to communicate the style and brand of the musician.
I aim to incorporate Scher’s influence into my work by experimenting with a wide range of materials as well as photography, and trying to create single letters of typefaces by hand.
