On the occasion of Auckland University Press’ release of “Gordon Walters”, Glorious is proud to present ‘Te Whiti’, on behalf of the Gordon Walters Estate, in association with Starkwhite.

Leading digital studio and marketplace, Glorious, is delighted to announce the release of a digital edition of Te Whiti. This artwork will be released on the occasion of Auckland University Press’ launch of Francis Pound’s Gordon Walters tome on September 14, 2023.

Not only will the digital edition of Te Whiti arrive with a physical book, when digital collectors open their Francis Pound tome, they will discover a surprise inside the cover: a special, limited edition screen print of Te Whiti, courtesy of the Gordon Walters Estate, measuring 26 x 19 cm. This unique offering allows collectors to experience Walters’ artistry through both traditional and digital media. Together with Pound’s magnum opus, collectors will receive a comprehensive appreciation of Walters’ creative brilliance.

Te Whiti stands as one of the most important paintings in Gordon Walters’ entire career and, consequently, holds a significant place in the heart of New Zealand modernism and our wider art historical canon. Te Whiti, painted in 1964, was Walters’ first, fully realised, iconic koru painting, utilising his famous hard edged, uncompromising, modernist abstraction of the koru form. It was painted in his experimental new medium(PVA paint), which he would remain committed to for the rest of his career.

There will only be 100 digital editions of Te Whiti available to purchase, exclusively on the Glorious Marketplace available from September 14, 2023. These editions are priced at NZD$1000 and include the digital artwork, physical book and screenprint.

Glorious’ commitment to preserving and sharing the legacy of significant artworks ensures that Te Whiti can be appreciated by a broader audience in the digital age.

Francis Pound’s exceptional work delves into Walters’ artistic evolution, encompassing his steps and missteps, diverse explorations, and travels both in Aotearoa and overseas. The study sheds light on the influences that shaped Walters’ art, including Māori and Pacific art, surrealism, Mondrian, De Stijl, the Bauhaus, Euro-American abstraction, conceptual art, and minimalism.

As an acclaimed author, Francis Pound’s insights into Walters’ artistry are both profound and enlightening. “Gordon Walters” not only offers a compelling narrative about the artist’s life but also serves as an invaluable resource for understanding twentieth-century art and its multifaceted influences.

The release of the digital edition of Te Whiti is a testament to Gordon Walters’ enduring significance, as well as the pivotal role of digitisation in preserving and promoting cultural heritage. This release marks an exciting milestone in the art world, offering a new and immersive way to engage with Te Whiti and the extraordinary legacy of Gordon Walters.
