Easter island is famous for its Moais

Moais at Rano Raroku

A Moai is a big statue of a man made of black volcanic rock. The statue can be as tall as a house🏠 or a lamppost. The Moais are all facing the island and not the sea. We think it is because they are watching over the people. Before, they had eyes made of another type of rock but they fell. Some of them have a sort of hat made of an orange type of volcanic rock. We thought that it was a hat but it actually represents their hair. Moais are usually placed on a platform called an Ahu.

We went to a place called Rano Raraku where the Moais were sculpted centuries ago.

We also went to a sunset place where there were Moais too.

On Easter island, we also went climbing a volcano🌋 were there was a swamp in the crater. Next to the volcano, there was an abandoned village were the birdman ceremonies were happening. The birdman is a race where you had to jump from a cliff, swim🏊‍♂️ to a small island where you took a bird 🦅 egg and come back. The winner was declared the new leader of the island… But they don’t do that anymore.

I liked best the beach🏖 because the statues of Moais are a bit always the same and it’s just rocks…and in London, I saw more impressive statues at the science museum.

Playing on the beach

There are two beaches on Easter Island. One where you can swim and one where you can’t. The sand in white and the sea is blue!

But even at the beach, there are Moais looking at you!
