My friends say we have chosen ‘cruel’ names for our baby but I think they’re cute

“My husband and I are expecting our first child together in early June this year and we’re both a mixture of nerves and excitement,” a woman began her post to the Baby Names Mumsnet forum.

She explains that while they’re both fans of traditional names, they faced unexpected criticism from friends after sharing their “old-fashioned” picks for their upcoming arrival.

The old-fashioned names got negative feedback

“We have decided on Arthur for a boy or Edith for a girl,” she reveals, “but we’ve decided to wait until the actual birth to find out the gender.”

She added that the pair landed on these names as they think they’re “sweet” and “could work for both a child and adult.”

However, their friends’ opinions couldn’t have differed more.

“When I mentioned it to them, they started laughing in my face and told me it was cruel to name our child something so old fashioned as they’ll be ridiculed at school,” she writes, before asking the forum to weigh in with their thoughts.

“My husband and I don’t see where they’re coming from,” she concludes.

“Ignore your friends”

People quickly reassured the poster and condemned her so-called friends for mocking the names.

“Love both names, ignore your friends,” one person urged.

“They clearly don’t know much about what kids are being called these days,” insisted someone else.

And a third pointed out that vintage names are making a trendy comeback.

“Nothing wrong with the names. Not a huge fan of Edith personally but I know old-fashioned names have made a comeback,” one user said.

“Every second baby boy I know is called Arthur at the moment so I can’t see any being picked on there,” replied a different woman.

Others said the OP’s friends are “horrible” for even offering their negative opinions on the names in the first place.

“I have had a few friends who when they tell me the names they have chosen I am a little unsure,” one admitted. “but I would never say anything.”
