The Meikleour Beech Hedge is a breathtaking sight to behold. On the A93 road around 4 miles south of Blairgowrie it is the longest hedge in Britain and the tallest in the world. It reaches 30 metres (98 feet) in height and is 530 metres (1740 feet) in length.

The hedge is mentioned in the Guinness World Records and visitors from around the globe come to admire and photograph this world-beating wonder. It was planted in the Autumn of 1745 by Jean Mercer and her husband, Robert Murray Nairne on the Marquess of Lansdowne’s Meikleour estate.

1745 was the year of the second Jacobite uprising and  Robert Murray Nairne along with other local men took up arms for Bonnie Prince Charlie. Many, including Robert Murray Nairne, gave their lives at  the Battle of Culloden.   The hedge has been allowed to grow towards the heavens as a living monument to their memory.

In the past it has received a trim every 10 years, although its most recent trim in late 2019, was the first in almost 20 years.
