Gasteria Amour is a succulent that’s easy to fall in love with (sorry, couldn’t resist). It’s broad elongated strappy leaves, shiny deep green with random white spots that coalesce to form irregular bands, just ask to be stroked with a loving touch (enough already). It may just be Gasteria Brachyphylla with a fancy name, but it is certainly a deeply attractive thing that will grace any windowsill or similar position.

Position : bright position indoors.
Soil : very well drained potting mix.
Height : 15 to 25 cm / 6 to 9 in.

WINDOWSILL READY IN NON-PLASTIC POT WITH SAUCER.

This plant will be supplied in a 10.5 cm non-plastic pot with matching saucer: these are made of rice hulls, will last for several seasons and can ultimately be broken up and composted. It will grow happily in this pot for at least 12 months. Terracotta pot in photo 1 is for display purposes only.

Gasteria Amour forms a low elongated rosette of those quite chunky leaves; it’s not a slow grower so will bulk up nicely and produce little offsets at the base, which can be left in situ to create a pretty clumping effect or removed and potted up as new individual plants. White-tipped globular pink flowers (remember the name gasteria refers to the pouch or stomach shape of the flowers) are produced on slender stems in autumn or spring.

As suggested above, we suspect that the name Amour may well be a marketing ploy to bolster the sales-bench charms of Gasteria Brachyphylla. It’s certainly an attractive name for an already attractive plant, which is native to the Western Cape area of South Africa, where it grows on shale and sandstone outcrops from the flatter lands to mountainous areas up to altitudes approaching 1000 metres.

So Gasteria Amour is a pretty versatile plant and won’t present too many problems for the houseplant lover in terms of looking after it. We recommend moderate weekly watering from late spring to autumn and little, if any, water in winter. The usual bright spot without too much direct sunshine is also recommended to keep it happy. Gasteria are tolerant of fairly low winter temperatures, so a cool windowsill or greenhouse are suitable.

Here is a video that serves as an introduction to growing Gasteria Brachyphylla.
