I was a boy who played with Barbie — no shock or shame there. But that time has long since passed … or at least that was the assumption I operated under until I laid eyes on the hyper-stylized collection of “Mad Men” dolls Barbie plans to release later this year.
Now, I have little interest in playing with Don Draper or Roger Sterling — but I would really appreciate if you could give me 20 minutes alone with the divinely dressed Betty Draper or Joan Holloway dolls. I love that even Barbie’s version of Joan is throwing you shade — note the arched eyebrows and disapproving glare her 11-inch mini-me exudes.
What I am less enamored with is the Barbie-fication of Ms. Holloway — gone are her boobs, her butt, her hips! All the things that make her delightfully Joan … and what Barbie wishes she looked like!
Still … I want, I want, I want.
