West Rocks School Soccer Complex Unveiled In Norwalk

The facility was significantly upgraded to include new bathrooms and a concession stand, as well as alleviate traffic concerns in the area.

NORWALK, CT — Mayor Harry Rilling joined school and city officials Thursday afternoon to officially unveil the significant upgrades made to the West Rocks School Soccer Complex.

Upgrades to the facility at West Rocks Middle School include new bathrooms and a concession stand, as well as additional off-street parking to help alleviate traffic concerns in the area, according to city officials.

"This is a beautiful complex here at West Rocks Middle School, the school that I attended oh so many years ago," Rilling said during the ribbon cutting event. "We're so very proud of what's happened here...this is a real big upgrade, and we're so proud of what we've done."

Rilling thanked the city's public works and recreation and parks departments, as well as Norwalk Public Schools, for their contributions to the project.

"This is a field that our young people are entitled to," Rilling said. "They should have a field like this."

Norwalk Junior Soccer Association president Bob Fosina said the field was difficult to manage prior to the upgrades and thanked Rilling and the city for their hard work.

Prior to the ribbon cutting, awards were presented to the association's 2021 scholarship winners. Winners included six Brien McMahon High School students, two Norwalk High School students and a St. Luke's School student.

Fosina noted many of the scholarship recipients do more than just play sports; some help referee and others mentor younger students.

"It's that type of character that's going to take you really far in the world," Fosina said. "Keep that going."

West Rocks Principal Adam Reynolds said the school, as a community, was really excited the city invested in the field.

"Our kids are going to get a lot of use out of it," Reynolds said, "not only in NJSA, but our West Rocks students during the school day, whether it be recess [or physical education] classes in general. We are really excited about that."

Reynolds also praised the look of the facility.

"I think it's beautiful," Reynolds said. "When people drive by, myself included, it makes it look like a really welcoming place."
