The Oscar nominee surprised guests during an appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon with her limited guitar skills – gleaned from online YouTube tutorials. "For my boyfriend's [Adam Shulman's] birthday, I learned how to play a song for him," she said. "It's the Beatles song 'Blackbird.' And so I studied it for a while and then I learned how to play it."

Although she didn't sing in Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, the Oscar-winning actress does have a few musical talents up her sleeve. "I can play the flute!" she told InStyle. "I played in high school. I also paint – so, mixed media."

Like Berry, the Valentine's Day star spent her high school years as a die-hard band geek, picking up the saxophone at George Washington High School. "I was proud of it," Garner told PEOPLE. "I picked it up again a couple of years ago, and I sound God-awful now!"

The Oscar-nominated actor's love of music goes back to his days playing guitar in South Florida garage bands. Depp dropped out of high school to pursue fame with The Kids, a power-pop group that he reunited with in 2008 for a benefit concert. Since then, he's collaborated with with Oasis and The Pogues. "I figured I could always go back to playing guitar or pumping gas or something," he once said on Inside the Actors Studio.

Like Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe left school at 16 to chase his stage dreams. To this day, the Oscar winner likes to rock out – as either a vocalist or guitarist – with his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts (TOFOG), now known as The Ordinary Fear of God. "The vast majority of people who talk about us have never even heard us," old band mate Dave Kelly told TIME. "'Russell Crowe's band? I heard they suck.' It's frustrating. But Russell's always been in the band." Next up for the singing Crowe? A new album and U.S. tour, starting next May.

The (500) Days of Summer actress originally pursued a different career: "I started out doing musical theater," she told PEOPLE. "I've had 15 years of voice training." Deschanel, performing as the "she" in the folk duo She amp Him, also plays the keyboard, banjo and ukulele.

Entourage star Adrian Grenier cut his teeth studying drama at N.Y.C.'s own Fame, LaGuardia High School of Music and Arts. But music – rather than acting – called out to him, and soon he was playing the drums, bass and guitar for bands like Kid Friendly and The Honey Brothers. "He never gets tired," fellow Honey Brother D.S. Posner says of Grenier. "Beautiful, sweet voice. Can play – and insists on playing – all instruments. Looks good with or without a beard."

Having singer Lionel Richie as a dad and pop icon Michael Jackson as a godfather, Richie would be hard-pressed not to be influenced by music! She grew up studying the guitar, cello, violin and piano – and even founded the girl band Darling. But the busy designer turned author mom won't be releasing an album anytime soon. "I do eventually [want to record an album]," she told PEOPLE, "but right now I have a lot on my plate."

The Bored to Death star not only composed the theme song for his HBO comedy, but he also manned the drums for L.A. rock band Phantom Planet – the alt-rockers behind The O.C.'s catchy "California" theme song.

This low-key thespian has enjoyed success off-screen, thanks to his stint as a bassist for '90s grunge band Dogstar. The group scored gigs opening for Bon Jovi and Weezer, but broke up in 2002. Reeves still slaps the bass, though, and scored a second stint playing with the band Becky.

The wild and crazy guy is also a country star, having scooped up a Grammy earlier this year for his exceptional banjo plucking skills on The Crow – New Songs for the Five-String Banjo. "The result is a rare album by a moonlighting movie star that doesn't make its creator look like a jerk."

The heartthrob, who plays both piano and guitar, also contributed music to the Twilight soundtrack, "Let Me Sign" and "Never Think."
