In the first official trailer for Carol, a young department-store clerk (Mara) meets Carol (Blanchett), a woman trapped in a loveless marriage. The women enter into a secret romance, which escalates after a tender sexual encounter. The mostly wordless montage features the forbidden couple’s first encounter, passing glances, longing touch and tearful moments. After a wildly successful debut at the Cannes Film Festival – where Mara, 30, won best actress for the film – the ’50s-set romance is already generating major Oscar buzz. Directed by Todd Haynes, the film is based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt. It is set to screen at both the London Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Carol hits theaters Nov. 27.
