Oscar- and Emmy-nominated actor Colin Firth spent years appearing in theatrical, film and television projects on both sides of the Atlantic before his performance as Mr. Darcy in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” made him an international star (and quite the heartthrob).
Firth was born the son of two professors and spent his childhood living in locales as diverse as Nigeria and St. Louis. He received his formal education in England, however, and trained to be an actor at the Drama Centre London.
His role as the mysterious gentleman suitor to Elizabeth Bennet in “Pride and Prejudice” created such a pop culture stir that Firth’s hunky charms became the object of lust for the fictional British journalist Bridget Jones in the bestselling novel “Bridget Jones’s Diary.”
When Hollywood adapted the book in 2001 with a film starring Renee Zellweger, they cast Firth as Jones’ love interest, Mark Darcy. He repeated the role in the 2004 sequel, “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.”
Though he had appeared in smaller roles in the Oscar-winning pictures “Shakespeare in Love” and “The English Patient,” it wasn’t until his starring turn in 2009’s “A Single Man” that he gained the motion picture academy’s notice. He received his first lead actor nomination for that role.
Firth is married to Italian film producer-director Livia Giuggioli, with whom he has two sons. He also has a son from a previous romantic relationship with actress Meg Tilly.
In addition to his acting work, Firth is heavily involved in several international causes, including a campaign to stop the British government's deportation of asylum seekers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a fair trade campaign affiliated with Oxfam and the nongovernmental organization Survival International, which protects the rights of native people around the globe.
