Excitement is brewing among wizards and Muggles alike as the much-anticipated Harry Potter television series, confirmed by HBO Max last April, finally receives a prospective release date.

Dedicated to bringing J.K. Rowling's magical world to the small screen, HBO Max has revealed that each of the original seven books will be honoured with its own season.

In a recent announcement on the Q4 earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed that the first instalment of the series — which is yet to be titled — is set to hit the small screen in 2026.

“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter,” Zaslav said.

“Both sides are just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max,’ he said, adding, “We’re aiming for a debut in 2026.”

The series is anticipated to span a decade, and recent reports indicate that writers are actively pitching ideas to HBO Max for the show. Casting details are yet to be confirmed, leaving fans eagerly speculating about who will bring their favourite characters to life in the adaptation.

“We’re in conversations with a number of different writers to figure out who’s going to be the person to lead that franchise for us,” HBO and Max content boss Channing Dungey told Variety.

“The first step for us is figuring out who this showrunner is going to be and once we get that locked down, then we can start having those [casting] conversations. The tricky part is the first two books, where the kids are on the younger end, around 11 or 12.”

J.K. Rowling, the creative force behind the wizarding world, is expected to play a significant role in shaping the series. As an executive producer, Rowling will contribute to the decision-making process, ensuring that the essence of her beloved books is faithfully translated into TV format.

The original film adaptations, released between 2001 and 2011, earned Warner Bros. a whopping $7.7 billion at the global box office.

The franchise soon expanded beyond the original book and film series with spin-off films like the Fantastic Beasts films. Despite its success, it has not been without its share of controversy, particularly surrounding J.K. Rowling's statements on the transgender community, with the series' announcement having reignited discussions about the ongoing discourse.
