Anemone Magic

I often get asked what's the secret behind the anemones that we feature in our designs. Lets pull back the curtain on this floral gem and inspire you to weave the anemone magic into your garden.

Anemones silky petals fan out around a dark center, creating an eye-catching contrast. Whether they’re the soft pastel varieties or the deep jewel-toned ones, each bloom is like a miniature work of art.

But beyond their beauty, anemones are a joy to grow. They're hardy, resilient, and will reward you with an abundant bloom with just a little love and care. For those who love early blossoms, anemones are a true delight – they often make their grand entrance in late winter or early spring, giving a refreshing splash of color when most of the world is still asleep.

A beautiful anemone starts beneath the soil, with a tiny corm (or tuber). It’s best to source your corms from sellers whose livelihood depends on it. They know the trade and know quality. 

Before planting, soak the corms for 3-4 hours. This softens their outer layer and prepares them for sprouting. You can even pre-sprout them in damp paper towels inside a dark, cool space or growing medium. Once you see tiny roots, they’re ready for the soil. Anemones love well-draining soil and a sunny to semi-shaded location. They don't like to sit in waterlogged soil, so ensure your chosen spot doesn’t retain too much water.

Once your anemones are in the ground, water them regularly but make sure not to overdo it. They enjoy a nice drink but don’t want to sit in soggy soil.

The joy of seeing those first anemone buds is unmatched! When you’re ready to cut them for your vases, do it early in the morning when the buds are just starting to open. This ensures they last longer in the vase. You want the “collar” of greenery under the bloom to be against the petals. As the flower ages, the neck elongates and collar pulls away from the bloom.

Remember, anemones are cool-weather flowers. With the onset of consistent warmer temperatures, they take their bow. The yellowing leaves signify their temporary adieu. You can either let them rest in the soil for a potential encore in fall or store them for the next season.
