Tahr

Hunting Himalayan Tahr in New Zealand is, in my opinion, the best value free range mountain hunt available anywhere today.

Southern Alps Trophy Hunting New Zealand have access to huge areas of managed private land for our Tahr hunts. Mostly our access to the hunting area is by 4×4.

Tahr, like most game animals, are active early morning and late afternoon. Many hours are spent searching the mountainsides and Rock faces with binoculars and high-powered spotting scopes for mature Bull Tahr. When a mature bull with good mane is found we plan a stalk.

Early season (March – April) bulls can be found in batchelor groups low on the mountain. Later into May the bulls move higher up the mountain with the female groups and live in high basins.

We will tailor a Tahr Hunt to your specific requirements depending on your own physical ability, and the time you have available. Tahr can be hunted in a wide range of terrain – from gentle rolling tussolk and impressive glacial valleys to more physically challenging steeper mountain terrain.

A Helicopter can also be made available to get up the mountain for those that enjoy flying!

The Tahr Rut is May and June. The best time to hunt Tahr is mid-April to mid-July to secure a bull with a full mane and a good winter coat.
