Keep the Half Beards Coming!

I’ve made no secret about my—disapproval? dismay? disappointment?—maybe all those things, with the seemingly decades-long popularity of beards and beard growing. I won’t even go into how common beards have become in the world of gay men, especially those of a certain age.

But there is a silver lining to this bristly cloud: the half beard. Even men who have dedicated their lives and faces to sporting bushy caveman beards sometimes shave, God bless them. And one near-meme I’ve seen more of in the last few years is a guy shaving half his beard for a two-face look that’s both comical and disturbingly (in a good way) hot.

It’s so easy for me to imagine making out with a guy who’s half and half (alas, I’ve only imagined it!)—one side bearded, one side shaved. The best of both worlds (at least temporarily). Now that I think of it, I’m surprised I haven’t posted more about the topic. Except for this most excellent photo of Paul Rudd, I think I’ve been remiss.

Well, over the next few months I plan to make up for that oversight, and here are a few good ones to get the ball rolling.

You might think that there’s not much difference between a guy with a half of a full beard shaved off and a guy with stubble who is half shaved, but I’d like to make a distinction. Both are wonderful in my eyes, of course. But a full beard really transforms a man’s face, so having the extremes—smooth and hairy—side-by-side, is really orders of magnitude greater, IMO.

Tom Selleck Shaves Half His ‘Stache

Tom Selleck is hot no matter what facial hair configuration he decides to sport, but he’s one of the few men who I think looks best with a mustache. Maybe I just got too used to the Magnum, P.I. look back in the 1980s. I had a mustache in the 1980s for an entire year while I was in college. I had tried for a beard and kind of missed. (Although a year or two later my next attempt was successful.)

But that’s neither here nor there. This is about Tom Selleck hamming it up on the Late Night with Conan O’Brien show back in 2004. It’s fun to watch.
