Situated to the south of the World Heritage Listed Daintree National Park, Mossman Gorge provides the perfect opportunity to soak up the natural scenery in this part of Australia and learn more about the fascinating Aboriginal history that characterises the region.

The Gorge itself is incredibly accessible, and is formed by the Mossman River cascading over huge granite boulders that are dotted around. This has created a number of freshwater swimming holes which are surrounded by lush velvet mountains that soar skywards all around. There are plenty of walks to indulge in around the Gorge, including the rainforest loop trail that takes you across the suspension bridge over the river and two kilometres around the ancient rainforest.

Perhaps the most prominent thing about Mossman Gorge is its Aboriginal connections. Here, you can venture back in time to experience the centuries-old traditions that continue to imbue the forest.

From the Mossman Visitors Centre, you can take part in a Dreamtime Walk Tour that provides a deeper insight into the age-old wildlife that resides in the area. On the way, your knowledgeable guide will tell you all about the Kuku Yalanji culture, including the many traditional plants uses they continue to practice today. At the end of the walk, you can watch a traditional dance performance carried out by the local people and discover some of the artifacts they still use.

As well as experiencing a slice of indigenous life, you’ll also be exposed to pretty streams, towering mountains, and ancient forests, that come together to create the mesmerising scenery of the Gorge and beyond. All these natural features are a apart of the Indigenous community, with each local tribes living side by side with the natural scenery in harmony.

Discovering the fascinating and rich cultural history of Mossman Gorge isn’t the only thing to do while you’re in the area. You can also try your hand at swimming in some of the clear, warm rock pools, or simply sunbake on the massive rocks nestled within the water. Otherwise, you can take a walk along one of the many walking tracks that weave through the pretty undergrowth. Keep your eyes peeled for vibrant bird species and wildlife as you go, and marvel at how such an ancient part of Australia has continued to thrive in today’s modern world. Stop off at the dedicated picnic areas to grab a bite to eat and pop into the Mossman Gorge Visitor Centre to learn more about the region and its inhabitants that have lived, worked, and thrived over thousands of years.
