1 Is Sedna a Planet?

2 What is Sedna? Sedna is a recently discovered object at the rim of the solar system. It’s name is from the Inuit goddess Sedna who rules over the seas, but its official title is 2003 VB12. There is a debate over whether Sedna is the 10th planet or just another space body. Sedna is at most about 1100 miles in diameter, making it smaller than Pluto. Its orbit is highly elliptical – very similar to a comet.

3 Size Comparison of Sedna

4 Sedna’s Orbit As can be seen, Sedna’s orbit is elliptical, unlike the other planets which are circular. This is similar to a comet’s orbit.

5 The Oort Cloud

Is Sedna a planet or just another lump of rock orbiting the Sun?

7 Is Sedna a Planet? Work in groups of 4 Organise the evidence cards
Use the cards to help you decide Justify your argument with evidence Present your point of view to the class
